Ray Hadley Biography and Career:

He was given the name Ray Hadley on September 27th, 1954. Eungai Rail, a little town on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, is where he spent a lot of time with his grandparents as a child. For many years after making the decision to get into sports broadcasting, Ray says his family and friends gave him weird looks every time they heard about his plans.

As a teenager, Ray graduated from high school in 1972 and attempted to get a job in sports broadcasting, but was unsuccessful. Later, he obtained work as a trainee auctioneer, where he remained for eight years after earning his auctioneers license. Ray gave up auctioneering and became a cab driver so that he could work as a racing presenter on the weekends while he worked as an auctioneer during the week.

Because of bad luck, he started calling greyhound races in 1980 in Appin, Bulli, and Nowra. He was driving a taxi one Tuesday evening when he picked up a fare in front of Radio 2UE. Ray’s life would be forever changed after that meeting with 2UE News Director Mark Collier. Within a month after that meeting, Ray was working casually at 2UE and took on whatever job that was handed to him.

He gave traffic updates on Gary O’Callaghan’s top-ranking breakfast show, was involved with ‘on-air’ marketing for numerous programs, and eventually found himself an understudy race caller to Des Hoysted and John Tapp. In 1987, he was given the opportunity to lead the 2UE Rugby League coverage. In the following 10 years, Ray led the Continuous Call Team to a string of rating victories for the show. Ray became the first ARL announcer since Frank Hyde to get nearly 200,000 listeners each quarter-hour just before the 1994 ARL Super League War.

Rugby League was taken away from 2UE in 1999. Ray had to deal with the most challenging period of his career. On Saturday and Sunday, 2UE requested him to broadcast a Rugby League program for six hours without access to the real game and with his correspondents unable to communicate with him from inside the ground. Amidst all of these obstacles, Ray and the Talking League Team won every rating period in 2000 and 2001, an accomplishment that left industry insiders stumped.

It was a first of its kind for something else. In February of 2002, Hadley made a decision that would impact his life forever. At the end of October 2001, he made the decision to leave Radio 2UE after 19 years and join Macquarie Radio Station 2GB. Ray and his “Continuous Call Team” had been invited by 2GB owner John Singleton to cover Rugby League.

‘Singo’ proposed to Ray after Ray agreed to the stipulations that he takes on John Laws, the King of Morning Radio. Until the news arrived that 2GB had signed Australia’s most popular breakfast host Alan Jones, Ray turned down the offer Ray agreed to host 9 am to noon weekdays on the condition that he may continue to lead the “Continuous Call Team” on the weekends.

As a result of Alan Jones’ longer breakfast show, Ray’s Weekday program was shifted to a new time slot in 2005: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. “The rest of it is history,” as they say.” For the first time in rating history, he had topped the charts every single day for a whole year. By the middle of 2003, his morning show had a 12.2 percent rating, while Rugby League coverage on Saturdays and Sundays was the top-rated programming.

Ray Hadley’s career highlights include broadcasting all of the swimming and track & field events at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. On September 25, 2000, he televised Cathy Freeman’s incredible victory over the odds. In the future, when she heard a repeat, Cathy stated that his call made it sound better than it was!

This will be his fourth Olympic Games, having previously covered the games in 1992 and 1996. The 2003 Rugby World Cup final, which he called graphically, will go down in history with his 14 Rugby League grand finals and 36 State of Origin games as some of his other memorable moments. During his tenure at Telstra and Aussie Stadiums, he broadcast the inaugural and last League Grand Finals, respectively, as well as the 1987 SCG championship game.

As a journalist, he has covered the 1991 Rugby World Cup in the United Kingdom and two Wallabies’ European tours. Among his best grand finals are the 1989 Balmain-Canberra thriller, the 1997 Manly-Newcastle showdown, and the 2003 Penrith-roosters victory. Six times in the last 11 years, Hadley has been recognized as Australia’s greatest radio sports broadcaster.

Ray has now earned a total of 12 radio industry honors known as the “Rewards.” As a broadcaster for Rugby League, Ray was granted a Medal of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday 2002 Honours List for his contributions to the sport as well as to the community.
