Real Salt Lake Biography and Career:

Real Salt Lake, abbreviated RSL, is a professional soccer team headquartered in the Salt Lake City metropolitan region. The team participates in the Western Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS). RSL debuted in the league as an expansion club in 2005. When the club’s inaugural owner and founder was given an expansion spot in Major League Soccer in 2004, the club was born.

The club’s home games are held in Rio Tinto Facility, a soccer-specific stadium in the Salt Lake City suburb of Sandy, Utah, which it shares with its sister team, Utah Royals FC. Prior to relocating to Rio Tinto, RSL played their home games at Rice-Eccles Stadium on the University of Utah’s campus from 2005 to 2007. Pablo Mastroeni is the team’s temporary head coach at the moment.

Real is a Spanish word that translates to “royal” in English. Real Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Real Betis, and Real Sociedad are among the most prominent Spanish teams that have had royal support from a reigning Spanish monarch. Owner Dave Checketts hoped to develop a brand name that would become widely recognised for its simplicity, as well as a link with the club’s goal of becoming a world-famous club in Madrid.

Real Salt Lake became Major League Soccer’s tenth franchise on July 14, 2004 when Major League Soccer awarded an expansion licence to SCP Worldwide, managed by Dave Checketts. After being acquired in a trade from the Dallas Burn, Jason Kreis became the first player in RSL history. Veteran Clint Mathis, Eddie Pope, and Jeff Cunningham were among the other famous players that played in RSL’s early years.

RSL’s first season occurred in 2005, with head coach John Ellinger at the helm. RSL debuted on April 2, 2005, at Giants Stadium, against the New York MetroStars, which resulted in a 0-0 stalemate. The next week, in a 3–1 defeat against the LA Galaxy at the Home Depot Center, Jason Kreis scored the first goal in team history. On April 16, 2005, RSL played their first-ever home match in front of 25,287 people at Rice-Eccles Stadium; Brian Dunseth scored a header in the 81st minute to secure a 1–0 win against the Colorado Rapids.

The season was essentially a letdown, despite the club breaking a league record with a 557-minute scoreless stretch. They were also on a 10-game losing skid until they managed a 2–2 tie on the road against the San Jose Earthquakes. The inaugural season ended with a 5–22–5 record.

In the first six matches of Real Salt Lake’s second season in 2006, the squad had five defeats and one draw. RSL had gone 18 games without a win, the longest winless stretch in MLS history. During an otherwise disappointing 2006 season, Jeff Cunningham, who moved to Salt Lake from Colorado, delivered the majority of Real’s highlights. The squad finished with a 10–13–9 record, failing to qualify for the playoffs.

During the 2009 MLS season, RSL was practically unbeatable at home, with a 9–1–5 record with a record-setting +23 goal difference at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Since May 2009, Real Salt Lake has not lost a league game at home. The team, on the other hand, failed to sustain form on the road. RSL found itself in a race for the remaining two MLS playoff positions in the closing weeks of the regular season. RSL, on the other hand, won a spot in the 2009 MLS playoffs with a win against Colorado in the last game of the regular season.

Despite having a losing record overall (11–12–7), the squad was awarded the last berth through a tie-breaker. Real Salt Lake went on to win the MLS Cup in 2009, beating the Los Angeles Galaxy in the final on November 22. RSL defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy in overtime to win the MLS Cup (5–4 on penalties). Robbie Russell scored the game-winning penalty kick. Nick Rimando, the goalkeeper, was chosen Man of the Match. RSL qualified for the 2010–11 CONCACAF Champions League after winning the MLS Cup in 2009.

During the 2010 season, RSL maintained their undefeated home record. After defeating FC Dallas on October 16, 2010, Real Salt Lake extended their home undefeated record to 25 games. Real Salt Lake now has the most straight home games without a defeat in MLS history. With zero defeats in the 2010 regular season, RSL equaled the San Jose Earthquakes’ 2005 record for a single-season home undefeated run.

Real Salt Lake finished second in the Supporters Shield race with a record of (15–4–11). Jámison Olave was voted MLS Defender of the Year, while goalkeeper Nick Rimando topped the league with 14 shutouts. RSL, on the other hand, was eliminated in the first round of the MLS playoffs by FC Dallas.

On March 20, 2017, the club announced that head coach Jeff Cassar had been fired three games into the season. For the games against the New York Red Bulls and Minnesota United, Daryl Shore was appointed temporary head coach. On March 29, it was reported that Mike Petke will take over as head coach after the April 1 game against Minnesota United. Despite a spectacular late-season surge, the squad fell one point short of entering the playoffs.

The new $78 million Training Center and Zion’s Bank Real Academy in Herriman, Utah, opened in time for the 2018 season. The complex was commended for providing year-round world-class training facilities for Real Salt Lake and the organization’s other clubs, the NWSL’s Utah Royals FC and the men’s second division Real Monarchs. It also houses the team’s youth academy, which was relocated from Casa Grande, Arizona, to provide a centralised site and a clear route for recruiting and developing young talent.

Long-time goalie Nick Rimando and defender Tony Beltran both retired at the conclusion of the season, making 2019 their last seasons. On August 11, the club also fired head coach Mike Petke after an altercation between the coach and match officials during the 2019 Leagues Cup. After being designated temporary manager for the rest of the season, assistant coach Freddy Juarez was finally named head coach at the end of the season.

Following criticism over his use of racist language in the past, MLS stated on August 30, 2020, that Hansen planned to sell his holdings in Real Salt Lake, Utah Royals FC, and Real Monarchs. In the absence of a new owner, MLS declared on January 8 that it would take over the club’s sales process.
