At age ten, she made her debut in front of the camera for the first time in the television adaption of The Camomile Lawn in 1992, directed by her father, Sir Peter Hall. Her first performance on a professional stage was in the 2002 production of Mrs. Warren’s Profession, which her father ran. For her performance, she was given the Ian Charleson Award.

After making her debut in Starter for 10 in 2006, Hall was cast in the leading part in the breakout role in the thriller film The Prestige directed by Christopher Nolan. In the romantic comedy-drama Vicky Cristina Barcelona, directed by Woody Allen and released in 2008, she played the role of Vicky, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.

After that, Hall had roles in a wide variety of films, such as the historical drama Frost/Nixon (2008), directed by Ron Howard; the crime drama The Town (2010), directed by Ben Affleck; the horror thriller The Awakening (2011), the superhero film Iron Man 3 (2013), the science fiction film Transcendence (2014), the psychological thriller The Gift (2015), and the live-action/CGI fantasy adventure film The BFG (2016).

The biographical drama Professor Marston and Wonder Woman (2017) and the monster movie Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) are scheduled to be released. In 2016, Hall received acclaim from film reviewers for her performance in the biographical drama Christine, in which she played the role of news reporter Christine Chubbuck. She debuted as a filmmaker with the film Passing (2021), which was met with widespread praise.

In addition to that, Hall has had several noteworthy appearances on British television. She was honored with the British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the Red Riding: 1974 miniseries, which aired on Channel 4. Because of her work in the 2013 episode of Parade’s End that aired on BBC Two, she was considered for a nomination for the British Academy Television Award for Best Actress.

Hall’s parents divorced in 1990 after going their ways while she was still a little child. The stage director, Edward Hall; the producer, Christopher Hall; the actors, Jennifer Caron Hall and Emma Hall; and the set designer, Lucy Hall, are Hall’s paternal half-siblings. Hall had her education at Roedean School, where she attained the position of head girl.

She had been attending St. Catharine’s College in Cambridge to study English literature until she left her studies there in 2002, shortly before entering her senior year. She established her very own theater company when she was a student at Cambridge, and she was an active participant in the student theater scene there. She actively participated in the Marlowe Society and collaborated on numerous shows with her flatmate Dan Stevens, who studied English literature at Emmanuel College.

At nine, Hall landed her first part in a professional production in 1992, when she played a younger version of Sophy in her father’s television adaptation of Mary Wesley’s The Camomile Lawn. Her first role in a feature film was the Rebecca Epstein role in the film version of David Nicholls’s novel Starter for Ten, which she debuted in 2006. The part of Sarah Borden, which she played in Christopher Nolan’s film The Prestige (2006), was the one that launched her career.

After that, she appeared in the 2007 film Joe’s Palace, which Stephen Poliakoff directed. She has played in several other television programs, such as Wide Sargasso Sea and Rubberheart. After starring in the Woody Allen movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) as one of the titular characters, Vicky, Hall’s celebrity in Hollywood skyrocketed after the film’s release.

Her performance was praised, so she was considered for a nomination for the Golden Globe Award in the category of Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture. In the historical drama directed by Ron Howard and starring Michael Sheen as David Frost, she made her debut as Frost’s girlfriend in the year 2008. Dorian Gray, a British fantasy-horror film, was based on Oscar Wilde’s book The Picture of Dorian Gray, published in 1890. The following year, she was cast in the movie.

After playing a supporting part in the independent film Please Give, Hall acted in the criminal thriller Ben Affleck directed and co-starring Jon Hamm titled The Town (2010). It was announced in June 2010 that she had won the British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Paula Garland in the 2009 production of Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1974 that was shown on Channel 4.

The following year, she landed the central role of a female protagonist in the 2011 British supernatural film The Awakening, first released in September of that year. In the comedy-drama film Lay the Favourite, released in 2012 and based on Beth Raymer’s book of the same name, she played the part of Beth Raymer. One critic says she “plays Raymer as an endearing force of nature who somehow manages to survive in a dangerous world through sheer force of character.”

Hall portrayed the real-life news reporter Christine Chubbuck in the 2016 biographical drama Christine. The film was released in the year 2016. She was described as “discomfitingly electric in the best role she’s yet been offered” by Variety magazine. In the film Professor Marston and the Wonder Woman, released in 2017, she played the role of Elizabeth Holloway Marston, a real-life psychologist who inspired Wonder Woman.

The following year, Hall was brought back together with Woody Allen when she was cast in the ensemble of A Rainy Day in New York. After re-reading material about the sexual assault claim against Woody Allen, Hall donated her salary to the organization Time’s Up in January 2018. She said that she did so because she realized “not only how complicated this matter is, but that my actions have made another woman feel silenced and dismissed.” I am sorry I made this choice; if I were to do it again, I would choose differently.
