Rhona Bennett Biography and Career:

Rhona Lynn Bennett, better known as Miss R&B, is an American singer, actor, and model. She is most known for her recurring role as Nicole on The Jamie Foxx Show. Rhona Lynn Bennett was born on May 10, 1976. She presently performs with the female R&B ensemble En Vogue.

Prior to entering the theatre and television industries professionally, Bennett started her career doing voiceovers and commercial films. Rhona was a cast member of The All-New Mickey Mouse Club on the Disney Channel before she joined the cast of The Jamie Foxx Show.

She belongs to the sorority Zeta Phi Beta. During the 1996–1997 television season, she also starred as Loquatia on the short-lived UPN sitcom Homeboys in Outer Space. When Bennett was 11 years old, ETA Creative Arts Theater introduced him to music. He performed “Christmas Melody” there.

She joined the 1990s iteration of The Mickey Mouse Club as a Mouseketeer in 1991. She also appeared in the Disney Channel’s Emerald Cove spin-off dramedy. Bennett traveled to California to pursue her acting career after the 1994 show’s cancellation and appeared in a number of shows, including Martin and Living Single.

In the middle of the 1990s, she was also cast in a recurring role as Loquatia on the sitcom Homeboys in Outer Space. Bennett was invited to join the fourth season of the WB sitcom The Jamie Foxx Show in early 2000 by casting director Dee Dee Bradley, who requested her to play Nicole, Jamie’s coworker and singing partner.

Bennett soon after, in late 2000, signed with Sony Music under the newly created boutique label Darkchild Records by producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, where she was given the moniker “First Lady of Darkchild.” For Bennett’s self-titled first album, Jerkins enlisted the majority of his regular working partners, including Robert “Big Bert” Smith, LaShawn Daniels, and his brother Fred Jerkins III.

Released in March 2001, the album’s lead song, “Satisfied,” spent the following month in the top five of the US Hot Dance Club Play chart but failing to chart or generate any interest overseas. Further plans to release Rhona were shelved after a promotional world tour due to a dispute between Sony Music and Darkchild Records.

As a result, the record only received a restricted release in Japan, and Bennett was shortly fired from the label.  Bennett was cast in a starring part in Men Cry in the Dark (2003), a stage adaptation of Michael Baisden’s 1999 novel of the same name, opposite Allen Payne in 2002.

The next year, Bennett joined En Vogue for a five-year run, during which she and Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron, the other founding members of the band, released the album Soul Flower (2004). Bennett quit the band after their 20th Anniversary World Tour in 2008 after several years of touring because Dawn Robinson, an original band member, had returned.

Bennett additionally gave a solo performance as Miss R&B at the American Airlines Center on July 27, 2008, where she assisted in generating money for a brand-new organization that supports the destitute. On August 29, 2008, Bennett performed at the American Music Festival with the En Vogue members.

Bennett started working on her second solo album The Anticipation of R&B under her own label Tone’n’Rhone Productions after leaving En Vogue. The singer collaborated with a range of artists on the album, including J.Y. Park and J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League as producers and Brandy, 40 Glocc, Ellis, and Herron from her band En Vogue.

However, despite being preceded by the singles “Range” and “Letting You Go,” the album was shelved in 2010 as a result of internal strife and inadequate promotion. Later, Bennett uploaded a number of tracks from The Anticipation of R&B to her Soundcloud page.

After the four founding members’ new music failed to materialize once more and Robinson and Jones quit the group once more in 2012, Bennett re-joined En Vogue. Bennett, Ellis, and Herron started working on the album Electric Café alongside mentors Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy after agreeing to a new contract with Pyramid Records in July 2014.

The group reunited to conduct a benefit concert to rescue the nightclub where they got their start in the Lifetime holiday movie An En Vogue Christmas in which they played fictionalized versions of themselves. En Vogue’s popular singles, two brand-new songs, and a cover of “O Holy Night” were all featured in the original film.

These songs were then made available digitally through Ellis and Herron’s own record company En Vogue Records.  Bennett’s single “Take Me There,” which was meant to be the lead single for his solo EP R&B Gumbo, was published in 2016. Similar to The Anticipation of R&B, the EP never happened.
