Rian Malan Biography and Career:

Rian Malan is a musician, journalist, and novelist born in South Africa and of Afrikaner origin. Malan’s risky habit of partying with musicians from the township began as a teenager and continued into adulthood. He traveled to the United States to avoid being drafted into the apartheid military. While there, he became a keen observer and writer of violence in modern culture.

In the 1980s, he finally returned to South Africa, where he wrote My Traitor’s Heart, a book about modern South Africa. It is a memoir of his childhood in apartheid-era South Africa, and as he goes along, he examines the state of race relations in the country through the lens of notable murder cases.

In the year 2000, he wrote an article about the history of the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” for the publication Rolling Stone. In the article, he traced the history of the song from its first recording by Solomon Linda, a penniless Zulu singer, to its adoption by The Weavers, The Tokens, and many of the folksingers of the 1960s, and finally to its appropriation by The Walt Disney Company in The Lion King.

Malan suffered through a severe midlife crisis a few years ago. As she arrived home, she would ask, “What did you do today?” It was not very entertaining. It is common among guys my age. According to what he shared with a Dutch journalist, Fred de Vries, “some purchase a Harley Davidson, others go off with the secretary, and some commit themselves.”

Rian first became familiar with boeremusiek while performing with the Kalahari Radio Orkes. Later, as a solo artist, he released the album Alien Inboorling, which featured peculiar songs with mumbled, melancholy lyrics. His music fell somewhere in the middle of the territory occupied by Tom Waits, Serge Gainsbourg, and Koos Kombuis.

Although Dylan needed to be involved in a motorbike accident to release himself from this weight, Rian found solace in music (playing a powerful rhythm guitar) and returning to speaking Afrikaans. I believe that due to the presence of songs such as Leonard Cohen’s Famous Blue Raincoat, it is technically impossible for me to create songs in English since they suffer so much in contrast to music written in other languages.

Afrikaans has just a couple really talented songwriters, Koos Prinsloo and Koos Kombuis. Other than that, it is just bland pop. And there are things that you can only say in Afrikaans because in English, they sound like shite, but in Afrikaans, they sound real.”

Rian Malan once remarked of Johannesburg that “foreigners believe we are insane going back to a doomed city on a wretched continent,” yet there is something that “you do not understand: it is dull where you are.” When I go to Malan’s hometown to meet him, South Africa’s most controversial and charismatic writer, I can experience firsthand the power of both halves of that statement.

There are now three items that are dominating the news in Johannesburg. The first tragedy was the savage murder of David Rattray, often known as the “white Zulu.” Rattray was a close friend of Prince Charles and was known for telling the tale of Rorke’s Drift from an African point of view; after the failed attempt to rob Rattray, a local Zulu whom Rattray knew shot and killed him in his bedroom.

The second subject that has been keeping the call-in programs busy involves an effort made by First National Bank to bring awareness to the rising rate of violent crime, which is now at 50 murders per day. This was done via an advertisement that discussed mobilizing the populace.’ The ANC government, concerned about using such rhetoric, pressured the bank to cancel the campaign.

And the third tale was about the incredible popularity of an Afrikaans song called “De la Rey,” which was a tribute to a commander who had battled the British with the Transvaal Bittereinders and assisted in the formation of the Afrikaans nation. The song’s lyrics stated that the Boer “country would rise again” and called for the return of General De la Rey with the phrase “We are ready.”

In the previous account, it was stated that Rian Malan had been quoted as suggesting that the success of the song was because “Afrikaners were so vilified in the latter years of apartheid that they just kept their heads down and put up with any shit for the first ten years of the democratic experiment.” This statement was made about Africans having kept their heads down and put up with any shite during the first ten years of democracy.

They were beginning to have second thoughts. The song was being chanted as if it were the national anthem in bars and at rugby fields; one hundred thousand copies of the CD had been sold. Malan said that ‘De la Rey,’ in addition to the crime statistics or the assassination of Rattray, was evidence that the rainbow country was once again in danger of disintegrating into its component colors. The imperfections were especially noticeable in the nation’s capital.
