Richard Linklater Biography and Career:
He is most renowned for his unique and deeply personal films that reflect his self-taught training as a director. Richard Linklater, whose full name is Richard Stuart Linklater, was born on July 30, 1960, in Houston, Texas, United States. When Linklater was 17, he went from Huntsville, Texas, to Houston, Texas, to live with his father to play baseball for a better high school team. He was accepted to Sam Houston State University on a baseball scholarship, but he left out and went to Houston to work on an offshore oil rig, where he met his future wife.
During his time ashore, he developed an interest in film by frequently going to the movies. Film studies classes at Austin Community College prompted Linklater to move to Austin in 1983, where he purchased a Super-8 camera and began filmmaking. After moving to Austin in 1983, he became involved in the local cinema community and helped form the Austin Film Society in 1985.
It’s Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books was Linklater’s first feature-length picture, which he produced, directed, photographed, and starred in (1988). When it comes to Austin’s bohemian scene, Slacker (1991) is a narrative-free film that wanders across several unrelated stories over the course of a single day. As a result of its success in film festivals, the American independent cinema movement gained momentum in the 1990s. However, Linklater’s debut picture for a major studio, Dazed and Confused (1993), is a low-budget, low-budget film.
It focuses on the director’s usual small-bore cinematic interests, such as the construction of distinct, contemplative, and eccentric characters. A slice-of-life comedy that follows teenagers at a suburban Texas high school on their last day of school in 1976 received praises for its authenticity. It was based primarily on Linklater’s own teenage experiences. Despite its lack of box office success, Dazed and Confused became a cult classic thanks to its star-studded cast (including Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey), which was praised by reviewers.
He followed that up with Before Sunrise (1995), which depicts two strangers (Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke) meeting on a train in Europe and spending the night together talking about the vagaries of human nature while traveling through Vienna. For the next two years, Linklater filmed two forgettable studio films (SubUrbia and The Newton Boys) before reverting to the rambling dialogue-heavy approach of his early films with Waking Life (2001).
As a follow-up to Slacker, this film has vignettes of people waxing philosophical, but unlike the earlier film, it follows a single protagonist. The rotoscoped (live-action footage is traced over by animation) aesthetics of Waking Life were hailed by critics for adding a dreamy dreamlike aspect to the picture. For his second film, Linklater made the experimental Tape (2001), which was followed by School of Rock (2003), which was converted into a children’s television show in 2016; it was also made into a feature film.
Prior to Sunset was a follow-up to Linklater, Delpy, and Hawke’s film from nine years earlier, in which the protagonists from the original film were reunited in Paris for a brief interlude. However, in a more mature and disillusioned tone, the sequel touches on many of the same topics as Before Sunrise. First Academy Award nomination for best adapted screenplay went to Before Sunset, which Linklater shared with Delpy, Hawke, and Kim Krizan. Bad News Bears (2005), a remake of the 1976 hit comedy about a motley Little League baseball team; A Scanner Darkly (2006); Fast Food Nation (2006); and Me and Orson Welles (2007) were all flops at the box office and critical level.
He then directed a series of films that received an underwhelming response both at the box office and from critics: (2008). “Bernie” is a black comedy based on the real-life murder of Shirley MacLaine’s affluent widow in the small East Texas town by her business manager, a former mortician (Black). Bernie Tiede was released from prison in 2014 after a defense counsel who was motivated by the film secured a hearing after discovering fresh evidence, and he moved into an apartment owned by Linklater.
When Delpy and Hawke are married with children, Linklater returns to the Before series with Before Midnight, the third film in the trilogy. Linklater and the two actors were nominated for an Academy Award for best-adapted screenplay once again for the picture. It was Linklater’s next film, Boyhood (2014), which was shot over the course of 12 years in order to convey the story of a six-year-transition old’s into adulthood. Golden Globes for best director and best drama were awarded to Linklater for his contribution to the picture.
It was also up for best film at the Academy Awards. Linklater was nominated for best director and best screenplay for his efforts on the picture. In the vein of Dazed and Confused, Everybody Wants Some!! (2016) was a playful look at the trials and tribulations of young adulthood. In the days leading up to the commencement of his freshman year in 1980, the film follows the antics of a college baseball player. He directed and authored the screen adaptation of Maria Semple’s bestseller, Where’d You Go, Bernadette? for Linklater to direct in 2019. Cate Blanchett portrayed an architect and mother who was grappling with “the dullness of existence” in the film.
