Rishi Sunak was raised in Southampton, Hampshire, in the South East of England. His father worked as a medical practitioner, and his mother was a pharmacist who owned and operated a neighborhood drugstore.
It was in the 1960s when Sunak’s grandparents, both born in Punjab Province, British India, decided to go to the United Kingdom from East Africa. Sunak is the oldest of three brothers and sisters. In addition to being a psychologist, his brother Sanjay and sister Rakhi also work in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as the Head of Humanitarian, Peacebuilding, and United Nations Funds and Programmes, respectively.
He attended Winchester College, Lincoln College, Oxford University, and Stanford University, among other institutions. During his summer vacation, Sunak worked as a waiter in a curry restaurant in the city of Southampton.
During his tenure at the university, he worked as an intern at the Conservative Campaign Headquarters. A financial analyst at the investment firm Goldman Sachs from 2001 to 2004 was his previous position. He resigned from his previous position to join The Children’s Investment Fund Management (TCI), where he rose to the position of partner in September 2006. In 2016, he voted in favor of the EU referendum. In the 2017 General Election, he was re-elected to the House of Commons from the same constituency. From January 2018 until July 2019, he worked as the Parliamentary Undersecretary for International Development. Sunak was elevated to the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer after a government reshuffle in February 2020. Sunak submitted his first budget on March 11, 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 epidemic. As a result of the financial cost of the pandemic, Sunak pledged an extra £30 billion in investment, of which £12 billion was set aside for mitigating the economic impact of the COVID-19 epidemic.
The government announced emergency help for firms totaling £330 billion, as well as a pay subsidy plan for workers, on March 17, 2020. Three days later, he introduced the employment retention program, which drew widespread condemnation since it excluded an estimated 100,000 individuals from being eligible for it. The plan has been extended till September 30, 2021.
Sunak announced the Eat Out to Help Out Scheme, which would invest £30 billion to support and create employment in the hotel sector. Food and soft drinks at participating cafés, bars, and restaurants were 50 percent off, up to a maximum of £10 per person, thanks to government subsidies. The promotion was available from Monday through Wednesday from August 3 to August 31, 2020. While some consider the program a success since it has subsidized £849 million in meals, others believe it has failed. According to research conducted at the University of Warwick, the initiative was responsible for an increase of COVID-19 infections ranging between 8 percent and 17 percent.
Sunak said in his March 2021 budget that the deficit had increased to £355 billion in the fiscal year 2020-2021, the biggest level ever recorded during peacetime.
