Robby Krieger Biography and Career:

Krieger was born into a Jewish family in the city of Los Angeles, in the state of California. His engineer father enjoyed classical music, but his singer mother listened to Frank Sinatra and other artists like that. It was the first record, Peter and the Wolf, that completely enthralled him. After he was no longer able to play it, he switched to listening to other records. His first exposure to artists such as Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, and the Platters came courtesy of the radio. At the age of ten, he gave the trumpet a shot but quickly realized that it was not the instrument for him.

He had much more success when he started playing blues on the piano that belonged to his parents than when he played the trumpet. At the age of 17, he took pleasure in playing the guitar belonging to a friend. Krieger and his identical twin brother Ronny both went to the same Hebrew school. When Krieger was a boarder at the exclusive Menlo School in Menlo Park, California, there was study time in the evenings, so he was able to teach himself how to play the guitar during that time.

He started off by lowering the tuning of a ukulele until it was equivalent to the bottom four strings of a guitar and imitating a record that he had. Later on, around the middle of the 1960s, the academic Frank Chin instructed Krieger in the art of playing the flamenco guitar. Krieger and two of his classmates went on a trip over the holiday season to Puerto Vallarta. While there, Krieger made the purchase of a peg-tuned Ramrez guitar and enrolled in guitar lessons for a period of several months. He was skilled in a variety of musical styles, including flamenco, folk, blues, and jazz.

At Menlo, he was a member of a jug band called the Back Bay Chamber Pot Terriers. Krieger continued his education at the University of California, Santa Barbara, immediately following his graduation from high school.
