Robert Kubica Biography and Career:

Robert Kubica acquired his first automobile when he was four years old: “It had a four-stroke motor with no horsepower, but it could still drive around 40 kilometers per hour.” He used it until he was able to afford a genuine kart two and a half years later, and at the age of 10, he obtained his racing license and began competing. Given the limited motor racing infrastructure in his home Poland, Kubica began competing in Italy at the age of 13, driving for kart manufacturer CRG. He won his first race at the age of 16.

Kubica was able to adapt to the contrasts in culture and continue to achieve success in karting races. In the European JICA championships, he competed against drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, among others, and Hamilton considers Kubica to be one of his most formidable opponents.

Kubica began single-seater racing in 2001, competing in the Italian and European Formula Renault championships under the tutelage of Daniele Morelli, who provided him with invaluable assistance. After Jose Maria Lopez won the Italian championship the previous year, he finished second in his second year of competition.

In 2003, he moved up to Formula Three, where he won a solitary victory for Prema Powerteam at the Norisring street circuit, finishing the season in 12th place. The next year, he transferred to ASL-Mucke and ended eighth in the tournament, but he was unable to duplicate his victory from the year before.

He competed for Manor in the season-ending non-championship race in Macau, where he was joined by Hamilton. As team head John Booth put it off the duo, “On the practice track, they’d go out and on the first lap, Lewis would be 2.5 seconds in front of everyone.” Despite taking pole position for the qualifying race ahead of Hamilton, the latter overhauled him at the start and went on to win. After Hamilton was knocked out by Rosberg in the final, Kubica finished second behind Alexandre Premat in the final standings.

In 2005, Kubica joined the Epsilon Euskadi squad, which competed in the World Series by Renault. With four victories and seven additional podium places, he defeated Adrian Valles to win the championship by a margin of 154 points to Valles’s 116. That resulted in his being invited to test with the Renault F1 team, who ultimately declined to grant him a position in the squad.

Instead, BMW’s Mario Theissen, who had just established himself as a separate F1 team from Williams, hired Kubica before even giving him a chance to test with the team. Taking on the position of the third driver for the BMW squad, Kubica did 25,000 kilometres of testing for the company. In 2006, when Jacques Villeneuve was sacked from the team six races before the conclusion of the season, Kubica was elevated to the racing squad.

On his Hungaroring debut, he finished in the points but was disqualified due to being underweight due to a mechanical failure. Fortunately, he more than made up for his disappointment in Monza, when he finished on the podium in just his third Formula One appearance.

BMW retained his services for 2007, and he initially seemed to have difficulty with the new Bridgestone tyres. Then, during the Canadian Grand Prix, he was involved in a massive collision from which he was very lucky to walk away unharmed. Because of a medical precaution, he did not compete in the next round, but in his first race back, he out-qualified Nick Heidfeld and finished fourth.

Heidfeld maintained his advantage throughout the season, although Kubica came the closest to taking home the championship. Despite having taken the lead in the wet/dry race at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, he was forced to withdraw from the race soon after. Kubica has single-handedly established Formula One as a popular sport in Poland, despite the fact that he has sometimes been disappointed by the high expectations placed on him by his compatriots due to their lack of understanding of the sport.

“Before I began in Formula 1, there was virtually little enthusiasm in the sport,” he said at the beginning of 2008. Now it is a proven fact that Formula 1 knowledge in Poland has increased significantly, and if you compare television audiences from a couple of years ago with those today, you will notice an incredible increase, as well as the number of fans who attend races, enjoy the sport, and cross their fingers for me.”

He had a good feeling about the F1.08 from the very first time he drove it before the 2008 season got begun. When he started the first race in Melbourne, he came within inches of capturing pole position, and two races later he became the first Pole to start a race from the front row.

More firsts were to come: in Montreal, he took advantage of an accident between Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen to snag a victory, completing a BMW one-two and taking the lead in the drivers’ championship. Kubica remained in contention for the drivers’ championship until the last round, but his lead could not be sustained since the F1.08 was not keeping up with the front-runners’ speed.
