Robert Venditti Biography and Career:

Robert Venditti is an American comic book author best known for his work on the Top Shelf Productions book The Surrogates, which was turned into a blockbuster movie starring Bruce Willis and produced by Jonathan Mostow for Disney.

He also wrote the X-O Manowar comic book for Valiant Comics. The Flash, Green Lantern, Justice League, and Hawkman are just a few of the DC Comics series for which he has contributed. Later, after relocating to Gainesville, he attended the University of Florida and graduated with a B.A. in political science and English. He worked as a law firm clerk in southern Florida after graduating from college with the intention of becoming a lawyer, but he did not enjoy the work.

His parents had relocated to the Port St. John/Titusville area of Brevard County, where he later worked pumping gas on a fuel truck. There, he attended the University of Central Florida and worked at a Borders Books shop in Winter Park while obtaining his M.A. in creative writing. Around 2000, he was suggested comic books as reading material by a coworker while he was employed at Borders.

After reading Kurt Busiek’s Astro City, the originally sceptic Venditti decided to switch his career goals from prose to comics, despite his first misconception that comics were only for kids. At a convention in 2002, Venditti met Chris Staros of Top Shelf Productions and was added to his email list. Staros then sent out a mass email in April encouraging readers to place orders to support the distributor after learning that Top Shelf’s distributor was declaring bankruptcy.

Venditti reached out to Staros to offer assistance, and ultimately worked at his warehouse. The Surrogates was a project that Venditti started in July 2002 and finished in December. He then handed the script to Staros, who opted to publish it through Top Shelf despite the fact that it was unlike the normal content they released.

The five-issue miniseries’ first issue was released in July 2005 and the fifth in March 2006. The original miniseries’ feature film version, starring Bruce Willis, and the prequel Surrogates: Flesh & Bone were both released in September 2009.Venditti started penning the X-O Manowar comic book series in May 2012 for Valiant Entertainment.

With issue #16, Venditti took over Demon Knights from Paul Cornell, marking the beginning of his first project for DC Comics. In June 2013, he took over Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps.
