Robert Zemeckis Biography and Career:
Rober Lee Zemeckis, full name Robert Lee Zemeckis, was born on May 14, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He is an American filmmaker and screenwriter who is best known for making entertaining films that often make inventive use of special effects. In 1973, Zemeckis graduated from the University of Southern California with a bachelor’s degree in filmmaking, where he met fellow student Robert Gale, who would go on to become his long-term screenwriting collaborator.
Even before he graduated, Zemeckis’ work caught the notice of acclaimed American director Steven Spielberg, who went on to produce Zemeckis and Gale’s first full-length feature film, I Wanna Hold Your Hand (I Want to Hold Your Hand) (1978). In the comedy, directed by Robert Zemeckis, three young girls get obsessed with the Beatles, and their relationship develops into something more. A script for the Steven Spielberg-directed 1941 (1979) was written by Zemeckis and Gale the next year, and Spielberg served as executive producer for several future Zemeckis films, including his next project Used Cars.
In 1984, Robert Zemeckis directed the action-adventure comedy Romancing the Stone, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. It was his first major commercial triumph. During the production of his time-traveling teen comedy Back to the Future (1985) and its sequels, director Robert Zemeckis established a reputation for visual innovation, which he further solidified with the release of Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), a feature film that combined onscreen action involving live actors and cartoon characters.
In the 1994 film Forrest Gump, the title character comes into contact with a number of historical people, including President John F. Kennedy and Elvis Presley. Rather than casting actors to play these well-known figures, director Robert Zemeckis inserted a video of actor Tom Hanks onto archive news footage. With the resulting picture, Zemeckis was recognized with an Academy Award for best director. Cast Away (2000) and The Polar Express (2004), both of which starred Hanks, was directed by Robert Zemeckis, who earned his first screenwriting credit in nearly a decade with the latter film.
It used motion-capture animation, which is a process in which the recorded actions of live actors are digitally turned into animated visuals, to create the film, which was based on a children’s book of the same name. Beowulf (2007) and A Christmas Carol (2008), both directed by Robert Zemeckis, were made using the same process (2009).
Flight (2012), a drama about an airplane pilot (Denzel Washington) whose heroic actions on the job are undermined by the revelation of his substance abuse, and The Walk (2015), a documentary about Frenchman Philippe Petit’s (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) 1974 high-wire walk between the World Trade Center towers, marked his return to traditional live-action filmmaking. An intelligence officer from Canada (Brad Pitt) is tasked with determining whether his wife (Marion Cotillard) is a German spy during World War II in the thriller Allied (2016).
Welcome to Marwen (2018), a drama based on the actual tale of an artist (Steve Carell) who, after a traumatic incident, finds a therapeutic outlet in creating a miniature town filled with dolls that symbolize the people in his life, was written and directed by Zemeckis after that.
He then directed and co-wrote The Witches (2020), which was an adaption of a children’s book by Roald Dahl. Zemeckis also co-wrote and directed the comedy for the whole family. In 2015, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City held a retrospective of his film and television work, titled What Lies Beneath: The Films of Robert Zemeckis. The exhibition was organized by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
