Ruby Walsh Biography and Career:

Born in Kill, County Kildare, Ireland, Rupert “Ruby” Walsh was dubbed “Ruby” by his peers. He is a former jockey from Ireland. Ted Walsh, a former amateur jockey, and Helen Walsh, his wife, are the parents of the second and oldest son, respectively. Only Sir Anthony McCoy and Richard Johnson have more victories in British and Irish jump racing history than Walsh. Walsh won the Irish amateur title twice, aged 18 and 18, before becoming professional in 1996/97 and 1997/98.

Papillon, a horse trained by his father and owned by Mrs. J Maxwell Moran, won the English Grand National in 2000 at the age of 20. The next year, the father and son team won the Irish Grand National on Commanche Court. Walsh won three of the four Nationals in the 2004/05 season: the Irish on Numbersixvalverde, the subsequent 2007 Grand National winner, the Welsh on Silver Birch, and the English on Hedgehunter. In the Scottish, he rode Cornish Rebel, but Joe’s Edge beat him by a nose.

After Tony McCoy’s retirement in 2015, he became the only active jockey to have won all four Nationals on the same horse, Take Control, in 2002. With two victories in the 2000 and 2005 Grand Nationals under his belt (second in 2006), third in 2009, and fourth again in 2010, Walsh has the best Grand National record among active jockeys (2001, 2002). Since his debut win on Alexander Banquet in 1998, Walsh has ridden over 2500 winners, including 59 winners at the Cheltenham Festival.

On Azertyuiop, the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 2004, Kauto Star in the 2007 and 2009 Cheltenham Gold Cups, and Master Minded in the 2008 and 2009 editions of the Queen Mother. On Kauto Star, he also won the Tingle Creek and King George VI Chases in 2006. When Kauto Star won by 36 lengths in 2007, 2008, and 2009, he duplicated the King George feat on the same horse, just a few days after returning from injury.

Onboard Kauto Star, he won King George VI Chase for the second time in three years in 2011. twice, with Denman and Strong Flow, the Hennessy Gold Cup was his trophy. As for the Whitbread Gold Cup, he was victorious twice with Ad Hoc: first in 2001 and then again in 2003 (this time it was known as the Attheraces Gold Cup). Walsh was the first recipient of the British Horseracing Board’s Order of Merit for jockeys in 2007. Since 1998/99, Walsh has won the Irish jump jockey championship twelve times – 1998/99, 2000/01, 2004/05, 2005/06, 2006/07, 2007/08, 2008/09, 2009/10, 2013/14, 2014/15, 2015/16, and 2016/17.

Even more amazing is Walsh’s recent dominance of the Irish jockeys’ championship given that he had an unusual riding arrangement with two major stables, one on either side of the Irish Sea, for more than 10 years. He rides primarily for Willie Mullins in Ireland, where he and his wife Gillian reside in Calverstown, County Kildare. Paul Nicholls, the previous trainer of Kauto Star, was one of his former employers in England, where he spent a significant amount of his career. His father Ted, and a number of other Irish trainers rely on Walsh to ride their horses occasionally.

Walsh set a new Irish jumps racing record in January 2007 when he won his 100th race on Bluestone Lad at Gowran Park. His tally in Ireland and the United Kingdom for the 2006/07 season was 198 victories, more than any other jockey from either country. Two horses were disqualified for adverse drug tests, bringing the total number of horses ineligible to 200. Walsh rode the subsequently promoted runners-up in both cases.) In 2007/08, he achieved the same accomplishment, riding Andreas to his 200th victory at Sandown, his penultimate ride of the season.

At Sligo in May 2008, he won his 1,000th Irish race with Rare Article. With seven victories on four days, Walsh set a new record at the Cheltenham Festival of 2009. At the 2016 Cheltenham Festival, he matched that record. Cheltenham Festival record-holder jockey Sanctuaire won the 2010 Fred Winter Juvenile Novices Handicap Hurdle, becoming him the most successful jockey in festival history.

The Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in 2011 was won by Hurricane Fly, ridden by Walsh, over Peddlers Cross and Oscar Whisky. On the first day of the Cheltenham Festival, it was Walsh’s first win in the main event. When Au Quart De Tour raced at Gowran Park on January 20, 2016, he won his 2,500th race.

Walsh is the Festival’s most successful rider with 59 wins and has won the leading rider’s title eleven times in the last fourteen years. Bashboy, ridden by Walsh, took home the Australian Grand National in august of 2015. On May 1st, 2019, Walsh announced his immediate retirement from racing following a 24-year career.
