Sacramento Kings Biography and Career:
In the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Sacramento Kings are an American professional basketball club located in Sacramento, California. The Kings compete in the Western Conference (NBA). Known then as the Rochester Royals of New York, the team won an NBA title in 1951, the year in which it was founded.
The Royals franchise was established in Rochester, New York, in 1945 as a member of the National Basketball Association (NBL). The squad was an immediate success, winning the National Basketball League championship in its first season in the league (1945–46) and reaching the NBL finals in each of the next two seasons.
It became a member of the Basketball Association of America (BAA) for the 1948–49 season and transferred to the National Basketball Association (NBA) before the following season when the NBA was created as a result of the merger of the BAA and the NBL. After a seven-game series victory against the New York Knicks in 1950–51, the Royals, headed by three future Hall of Famers (guards Bob Davies and Bobby Wanzer, and center Arnie Risen), won the NBA title by beating the Knicks in the finals.
The Royals, although having a talented collection of players, did not win another championship, but they were among the top teams in the early NBA, reaching the division finals (which were analogous to the contemporary NBA’s conference finals) on three occasions between 1949–50 and 1953–54.
The 1954–55 season was the first time in club history that the Royals ended with a losing record, and the team completed the rest of the decade with a losing record. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised as the Royals’ roster was replenished with young talents such as forwards Jack Twyman and Maurice Stokes.
Because of ongoing growth in the NBA during the 1950s, the Royals moved to the considerably bigger city of Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1957, and the following year signed center-forward Wayne Embry to their team.
Oscar Robertson, a great guard for the University of Cincinnati, was acquired by the Royals in 1960 as a result of a territorial selection. The Royals, led by the “Big O,” advanced to the division finals on two separate occasions in 1962–63 and 1963–64, losing both times to the eventual champion Boston Celtics.
Despite the acquisition of forwarding Jerry Lucas in 1963, who, like Robertson, was a territorial choice (from Ohio State) and a future Hall of Famer, the club failed to move beyond the first round of the playoffs in any of the franchise’s three previous playoff appearances throughout the decade of the 1960s.
The failing Kansas City Royals, who were coached by Bob Cousy from 1969 to 1973, were sold to a group of businessmen located in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1971. After one last season in Cincinnati, the club was transferred to Kansas City before the 1972–73 season and renamed the Kings since the city’s Major League Baseball team, the Royals, had already claimed the name Royals for themselves.
As part of its first three seasons after the relocation, the club split its home games between Kansas City and Omaha (Nebraska), and the team was known as the Kansas City–Omaha Kings during this time period. Despite the presence of all-star guard Nate (“Tiny”) Archibald at the start of the team’s 13-season stay in Kansas City, the team was mostly mediocre during this period, qualifying for the playoffs five times and advancing past the first round of the playoffs only once, a surprising run to the 1981 conference finals following a 40–42 regular season.

When the club, led by forwards Chris Webber and Peja Stojakovic, had its greatest success in 2001–02, it was the best record in the NBA and advanced to the Western Conference finals, where it was defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers in a thrilling seven-game series.
Since 2006–07, the Sacramento Kings have failed to qualify for the postseason, and the club has been recognized more for its management and off-court instability than for its on-court performance in the years that followed.
