Samuel Zell is a business magnate and giver who is Jewish and lives in the United States. He was born Shmuel Zielonka in the United States on September 28, 1941. Zell used to be a lawyer. In 1968, he started the private investment company Equity Group Investments and is now the chairman of the company. The business takes advantage of investment opportunities in a wide range of markets and places, as well as in its own capital structure. Sam got his degree the same year as everyone else. Zell started working in real estate when he was still in school. He took care of the owner’s 15-unit apartment building in exchange for free room and board, and soon he was also taking care of the owner’s other properties. By the time he graduated, he had made $150,000 from that business. Together with his brother Robert H. Lurie, who was also in the same fraternity, he was able to get a contract with a big apartment building owner in Ann Arbor. This owner was glad that Zell knew what college students wanted in an apartment complex.
When he got his J. D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1966, he and Lurie were already in charge of more than 4,000 apartments, and they had full control over 100–200 of them. He moved to Chicago after he graduated from high school and sold his share of the management firm to Lurie. After getting his degree, Zell worked for a week in the legal field before deciding that it wasn’t what he wanted to do for a living. Zell was able to buy an apartment building in Toledo because one of the senior partners decided to invest with him because he liked Zell’s enthusiasm for the business. Zell also bought a number of apartment complexes in the Reno, Nevada, area. One of these was called Arlington Towers.
Zell started the company that would grow into Equity Group Investments in 1968. Robert H. Lurie, a business partner from before, joined Zell at the new business a year later. They kept working together to turn the small company into a big one until Lurie died in 1990. Equity Group Investments was the place where three of the biggest real estate companies in history got their start. Equity Residential is the biggest owner of apartments in the United States.
Equity Office Properties Trust is the biggest owner of offices in the country, and Equity Lifestyle Properties owns and runs the resort and manufactured home communities. Zell’s companies went public in the 1990s, which made him a pioneer in the modern real estate industry. In 2006, the Blackstone Group said that it would buy Equity Office for $36 billion.
At the time, this was the largest leveraged buyout in the world’s history. After that, Blackstone was able to sell a lot of the portfolio’s assets for amounts that had never been seen before. Zell associates once ran the Schwinn Bicycle Business, the pharmacy Revco, the department store chain Broadway Stores, the energy company Santa Fe Energy Resources, and the mattress company Sealy. Zell was able to take full control of Intel Corporation in the year 1985. From 1992 to 1999, Zell’s Chilmark fund owned Jacor Communications, Inc., a successful radio broadcast company that also had a TV station. Clear Channel Communications bought the business in 1999 and kept it running.
On April 2, 2007, the Tribune Company said that it had accepted Zell’s offer to help the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, and the company’s other media assets go private. The Tribune Company is owned by Zell. Zell finished making the company private on December 20, 2007, and the next day he took over as chairman and CEO. He was in charge of selling both the Chicago Cubs and the company’s 25% share of Comcast SportsNet Chicago.
In December 2008, the Tribune Company filed for bankruptcy under chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code in order to reorganize its debts. This was because Zell’s leveraged buyout and the unexpected severity of the Great Recession had left the company with a lot of debt. Zell bought most of the Tribune Company in January 2008. The Tribune Company is the parent company of several newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune.
