Sammy Hagar Biography and Career:

After several years as the main vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the hard rock band Montrose in the mid-’70s, Sammy Hagar embarked on a solo career that resulted in multiple hit singles and established him as an album rock fan favorite. After joining Van Halen in 1985, Hagar became a major star, but he had already established himself as a successful hard rocker with his first album with Montrose.

After retiring from boxing in the late 1960s, Hagar began singing with a variety of California bands, including Skinny, the Fabulous Casillas, Justice Brothers, and Dust Cloud, among others. During this time, he established himself as a respected member of the California hard rock scene. Ronnie Montrose, a former Edgar Winter guitarist, approached Hagar about joining his band, Montrose, in 1973.

Before going solo in 1976, Hagar made two albums with the rock band Montrose, bringing the group’s bassist, Bill Church, along with him. Denny Carmassi, the drummer from Montrose, eventually became a member of Hagar’s band, along with keyboardist Geoff Workman. Hampton is still standing. Hagar’s self-titled “red album” was his debut chart entry, and it went on to become a platinum seller.

Workman, Church, guitarist Gary Pihl, and drummer Chuck Ruff were all members of his new supporting band, which he formed in 1979. This band appeared on Hagar’s most successful solo album, 1981’s platinum Standing Hampton, as well as 1982’s gold Three Lock Box, with the exception of one member: drummer Ruff, who was replaced by David Lauser on Three Lock Box. Hagar performed with guitarist Neal Schon, bassist Kenny Aaronson, and drummer Mike Shrieve after the release of Three Lock Box and the number 13 hit single “Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy.”

The group recorded a live album under the name Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve (HSAS), as well as a studio version of Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” His 1984 album VOA had the smash single “I Can’t Drive 55,” which peaked at number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. 5150 Hagar joined Van Halen in 1985, replacing David Lee Roth, and his first album with the band was 5150, released in 1986. In 1987, Hagar released his final solo album, which was given the title I Never Said Goodbye after winning an MTV contest.

In addition to the duration of the 1980s and the first half of the 1990s, Hagar remained with Van Halen. There were four more multi-platinum albums released by the band during that time period — OU812 (1988), For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991), Live: Right Here, Right Now (1993), and Balance (1995) — before problems between Hagar and the rest of the band began to show. The Best of Van Halen, Vol. 1 is a compilation of the band’s best songs.

The band had Roth return to sing two tracks on Best of Van Halen, Vol. 1 before signing Gary Cherone, a former Extreme vocalist, to take Hagar’s place in the summer of 1996, after he either departed or was sacked from the band in the previous winter. The entire affair created a media sensation, assuring that Hagar’s 1997 solo album Marching to Mars — his first studio record in ten years — would be met with widespread media attention. It did remarkably well in the charts, reaching number 20 and re-establishing Hagar as a viable solo artist.

Following up with Red Voodoo, which was released two years later and sold well on the strength of the single “Mas Tequila,” Hagar enlisted the help of a backing band called the Waboritas (which included guitarist Vic Johnson, keyboardist Jesse Harms, bassist Mona, and drummer David Lauser). The album only missed the Top 20 by a whisker. The number thirteen is ten. Hagar’s rise continued with the release of Ten 13 in 2000.

Not 4 Sale was released in 2003, and it was followed by Live: Hallelujah, which was his first live album in 20 years. Livin’ It Up! was released in 2006, and VOA was reprinted in a deluxe format the following year, both courtesy of the newly established American Beat Records label. His 11th solo album and first for Roadrunner imprint Loud & Proud Records, Cosmic Universal Fashion, was released in 2008.

It was his first album for the label. Following a jam session with Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and guitarist Joe Satriani, as well as Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, he formed a new band called Chickenfoot the following year. In 2009, the supergroup published its self-titled debut studio album, which became a worldwide hit. When Chickenfoot III was released in 2011, it was considered a success, and a sequel was planned for 2012.

For the 2013 album Sammy Hagar & Friends, Hagar didn’t leave his Chickenfoot brothers behind; each member of the band, as well as several other like-minded individuals, appeared on this party-hearty 2013 record. On the 2014 album, Lite Roast, Hagar and Wabos guitarist Vic Johnson gently tore through some coffeehouse-ready versions of Hagar classics, while the live album At Your Service was released in 2015, marking the first time a live album was released under the moniker Sammy Hagar & the Circle, his newest touring incarnation that includes Michael Anthony on bass,  There is a pause in between In 2019, The Circle released their debut studio album, The Space Between, which was produced by David Bowie.
