Samuel Eto’o Biography and Career:

Samuel Eto’o Fils is a Cameroonian football player who plays the position of striker. He was born on March 10, 1981. Eto’o went to Kadji Sports Academy for his training. Due to the fact that he also has a Spanish passport, he is not considered to be one of the “foreign players” operating inside the European Union.
Eto’o broke the record for most goals scored by an African player in La Liga with over 100 goals during his time with Barcelona.

He also holds the record for most appearances made by an African player in the league. As a result of his success with Barcelona and Milan in back-to-back seasons, he made history in 2010 by becoming the first player in history to win two European continental trebles. He is only the second player in the history of the UEFA Champions League to ever score in two different UEFA Champions League finals.

Additionally, he is only the fourth player in the history of the UEFA Champions League, following in the footsteps of Marcel Desailly, Paulo Sousa, and Gerard Piqué, to win the UEFA Champions League two years in a row with different teams. He has won the title for African Player of the Year an unprecedented four times, in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2010. This makes him the most decorated African player in the history of the sport. In 2005, he finished in third place for the title of FIFA World Player of the Year.

Eto’o was a part of the Cameroon national team that won the Olympic competition in the year 2000. This victory came when Eto’o was a member of the team. In addition, he has competed in three World Cups and six Africa Cups of Nations, in which he has won the title of champion twice. He has scored 18 goals in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations, making him the tournament’s all-time top scorer. He has 59 goals and 118 international appearances for Cameroon, making him the country’s all-time best scorer and the third most-capped player.

Real Madrid

Samuel Eto’o entered the youth program of Real Madrid in 1997, but due to the fact that he was still a juvenile, he was only allowed to practice with Real Madrid B. Real Madrid B was demoted to the third tier, Segunda División B, which is not open to players from outside the European Union. As a direct consequence of this, he was loaned to CD Leganés, who played in the second level, for the 1997–98 season. At the time, he was only in the tenth grade.

Following the conclusion of the 1998–1999 campaign, he went back to Madrid despite the fact that he had only scored four goals for the club while making 30 appearances for them. Although he was loaned out to RCD Espanyol in January 1999, he did not make a single appearance for the club during that time.

Mallorca
The next year, during the winter transfer window, he made a loan move to the RCD Mallorca squad that plays in La Liga. There, he played 19 games and scored six goals. Eto’o left Real Madrid at the conclusion of the season and signed a permanent agreement with RCD Mallorca for a club-record cost of £4.4 million. This was Eto’o’s first move after leaving Real Madrid. During his second year in the league, he scored 11 goals, which brought him to the attention of fans all over the league.

Regarding the manner in which he plays, the President of Mallorca, Mateo Alemany, was quoted as saying, “I doubt if there is any other player in the world who would please the fans more at this moment.” Eto’o voiced his own sentiments regarding his meteoric rise to fame, saying, “I like it here in Mallorca; I have always been well looked after, the fans appreciate me, and I also have a contract that runs until 2007.”

He showed his love for the fans by donating €30,000 to cover the cost of meals for Mallorca fans who traveled to the Copa del Rey final against Recreativo de Huelva in 2003. The game was between Mallorca and Recreativo de Huelva. Eto’o scored two goals in the last minutes of the game to ensure that Mallorca would win the match 3–0.

Barcelona
2004–2007
Eto’o left Mallorca as the club’s all-time leading domestic league scorer with 54 goals when he signed for FC Barcelona in the summer of 2004 for a transfer fee of €24 million. This came after lengthy, three-way negotiations with Mallorca and Madrid. Eto’o left Mallorca as the club’s all-time leading domestic league scorer.

At first, Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez intended to purchase back the player’s entire transfer rights and then loan him out once again. However, when the transaction with Barcelona proved profitable enough, Pérez ultimately decided to sell the player instead. In addition, the club already possessed the maximum number of three players who were not from the EU.

On August 29, 2004, Eto’o made his first appearance for Barcelona in the match against Racing de Santander, which served as the season opener. Eto’o harangued the crowd screaming “Madrid, cabrón, saluda al campeón” at the celebratory party that was held in the Camp Nou after Barcelona won the La Liga championship in 2004–2005.

The celebration was planned by the squad after Barcelona won the title (English: Madrid, bastards, salute the champions). Eto’o was issued a punishment of 12,000 Euros by the Royal Spanish Football Federation as a result of his statements, for which he subsequently expressed regret.

Real Madrid, the first professional club he played for, received his expression of sorrow and his request for forgiveness. However, the head of the fan club federation for Real Madrid remained unimpressed and stated, “This character is a fantastic player, but he leaves a lot to be desired as a person.”

When Eto’o scored his 26th goal of the season against Athletic Bilbao on the final matchday of the season on May 20, 2006, he edged out Valencia CF striker David Villa for the award. This was Eto’o’s second attempt at winning the Pichichi trophy, which is given to the top scorer in La Liga. The previous year, Eto’o was unable to win the award.

After the game, Eto’o showed his teammates a lot of grace by saying things like, “Despite the fact that only one person will receive the award, it was a team effort. We put in a lot of effort throughout the entire season, and now we are reaping the benefits of our labor.”

Eto’o was also instrumental in Barcelona’s run to the UEFA Champions League championship in 2005–2006, scoring six goals during that run. In the championship match, Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was shown a red card early on for bringing down Eto’o just outside of the penalty area.

However, the Catalans had trouble making the most of their one-man advantage until Eto’o scored the goal that tied the game in the second half. Eto’o was named UEFA’s Best Forward of the Year for his performance in the European competition, which led to Barcelona’s eventual victory by a score of 2–1, and the match ended with Barcelona’s victory.

Additionally, during that season, Eto’o was awarded the prestigious title of African Player of the Year for an unprecedented third year in a row. During his acceptance speech, he said, “Most importantly, I want to dedicate this to each and every child in Africa.” In addition to this, he was chosen for the FIFPro World XI for the second year in a row, and he finished third in the voting for the FIFA World Player of the Year. This achievement makes him only the second African footballer in the history of the sport to ever be voted into the top three.

Eto’o’s 2006–2007 campaign got off to a rocky start after he suffered a meniscus tear in his right knee while playing for Barcelona in a Champions League group stage match against Werder Bremen on September 27, 2006. Ricard Pruna, the team physician for Barcelona, initially estimated that the injury would sideline him for between two and three months. Following the procedure, Eto’o’s recuperation period was extended to five months; however, he resumed training with Barcelona at the beginning of January 2007.
