Sergio Pérez Biography and Career:

Sergio Perez, better known by his nick name Checo, made his Formula One debut with Sauber in 2011 and signed a contract with McLaren before the conclusion of his second season. The romance, on the other hand, turned out to be short-lived.

Perez began competing in karting in 1996. In 2004, he started competing in the Skip Barber series in the United States, thanks to the assistance of wealthy Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim’s Escuderia Telmex team. The next year, he relocated to Europe, where he competed in the German Formula BMW championship for two years.

Following his arrival in the United Kingdom in 2007, he raced with T-Sport, winning the national (junior) title that year before progressing to the main series the following year. He had a good start to the 2008 season, winning three races in the first six races, but he dropped to fourth place by the conclusion of the season.

The following year, he was promoted to GP2, where he finished on the podium in both races at Valencia and finished the season in 12th place. After switching from Arden to Addax, he had a better 2010, although he was defeated by Pastor Maldonado for the championship.

In 2011, he was recruited by Sauber to compete with Kamui Kobayashi in the Formula One World Championship. He also became a member of the driver development programme run by Ferrari, the engine supplier for Sauber. After making his F1 debut in the 2011 Australian Grand Prix, Perez became the first Mexican driver to do so in 30 years. He finished second in the race.

In Melbourne, he would have earned a point for his F1 debut had he finished seventh instead of eighth, but the two Saubers were penalised for a minor technical violation. Fourth place in the Spanish Grand Prix four races later earned him his first points.

Perez qualified for the first time in the final ten in the next race in Monaco, only to crash hard at the start of the third qualifying session. He did not sustain any significant injuries, but he did not participate in the race and did not compete in the next round in Canada since he was still recovering. Perez subsequently said that it took him many races to regain his previous level of fitness.

Despite this, he earned more points in the second half of the season and was often outqualified by the more experienced Kobayashi in qualifying sessions. He made an impression in Suzuka, battling his way through the field to score despite being ill at the time. As he ran out of the last bend, he took the opportunity to crack a joke on his teammates by informing them over the radio that his vehicle had lost power. His performance in a mid-season test for Ferrari suggested that he may be a possibility to join the team in the future, even though he just signed a contract extension with Sauber for 2012.

Perez had a good start to the 2012 season, coming within a whisker of winning a race in Malaysia that was hampered by rain. His last pit stop was badly timed, which resulted in him finishing second behind Fernando Alonso, which was a costly error for him.

Further podium performances followed in Canada and Italy, leading some to speculate that he would be signed by Ferrari as a replacement for Felipe Massa in the next season. Although this was frequently denied by the team’s president, Luca di Montezemolo, who claimed Perez did not have enough expertise, it was eventually accepted.

As a result of Montezemolo’s appraisal of Perez, when McLaren was in need of a replacement for Lewis Hamilton, the Sauber driver was signed to a multi-year deal with the team, which started in 2013. Perez’s “series of giant-killing efforts” throughout the 2012 season were complimented by team principal Martin Whitmarsh.

However, with the announcement of the McLaren contract, he was unable to score for Sauber once again. In Japan, he spun out when overtaking Hamilton, and in Brazil, he was involved in a collision with Sebastian Vettel and Bruno Senna.
