Shaquille O’Neal Biography and Career:

Shaquille O’Neal was born in Newark, New Jersey, parents Lucille O’Neal and Joe Toney on 6 March 1972. Since his father Toney was arrested for drug possession while Shaquille was an infant, he gave up his parental rights to O’Neal’s stepfather, Phillip A Harrison, an Army sergeant.
He graduated from Robert G. Cole High School in San Antonio, Texas, and then studied business at Louisiana State University. His basketball abilities earned him the title of ‘College Player of the Year’ during his university years.

He dropped out of college in 1992 to seek a career in the NBA. Shaquille O’ Neal was drafted in the 1992 NBA draught by the Orlando Magic. Within a week of his debut, his abilities won him the title of ‘Player of the Week,’ making him the first player to do so within a week of his debut. He had an outstanding season, averaging 23.4 points on 56.2 percent shooting, 13.9 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game. He was also named the ‘1993 NBA Rookie of the Year’ later that year.

He continued to play excellently in the years that followed, and in 1996, he was picked to represent the country at the Olympics as a member of the United States Olympic basketball team. The event, which took place in Atlanta, Georgia, proved to be one of the most difficult and significant tests of his career. His incredible abilities helped his squad win the gold medal.

Shaquille O’Neal was awarded the NBA’s most valuable player in 2000. The Los Angeles Lakers signed him to a three-year, $88.5 million contract. Despite the fact that he assisted the team in winning three straight world championships (2000, 2001, and 2002), his tenure with them was arduous. He had multiple clashes with team members, which resulted in his trade to the Miami Heat.In 2006, he assisted the Miami Heat in winning the NBA title, which was also O’Neal’s fourth championship.

O’Neal joined the Phoenix Suns in February 2008. However, in his earliest games with the squad, they mainly lost, which O’Neal blamed on his inability to communicate with the other players.

He later joined the Cleveland Cavaliers in June 2009 and played with them during the 2009-2010 season. He also became the sport’s oldest player during this season. By this point, his significance as a player had also diminished significantly.

O’Neal announced his retirement via social media on 1 June 2011 after a career spanning nineteen years. He also held a press conference at his Orlando home two days later to officially announce his retirement. Shaquille O’Neal, full name Shaquille Rashaun O’Neal, popularly known as Shaq, (born March 6, 1972 in Newark, New Jersey, United States), is an American basketball player who was named to the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) list of the league’s 50 best players in 1996.

When O’Neal was a senior in high school in San Antonio, Texas, he drew the attention of college recruiters after his team won the state championship. He attended Louisiana State University (LSU), rapidly establishing himself as one of the nation’s greatest players. In 1991, he was unanimously awarded the College Player of the Year. O’Neal dropped out of school and entered the 1992 NBA draught, where he was selected first overall by the Orlando Magic. He did, however, complete his studies and get a degree from LSU in 2000.

In 1992–93, O’Neal was named NBA Rookie of the Year, leading the Magic to a 41–41 record, 20 victories better than the previous season. He claimed the scoring title two years later and led Orlando to the NBA finals against the Houston Rockets. Following Houston’s rout of the Magic, O’Neal gained a reputation for dropping big games. O’Neal’s enormous stature and strength—he stood 7 feet 1 inch (2.16 metres) tall and weighed 315 pounds (143 kilograms)—made him practically unstoppable on the offensive end of the floor. He was, however, a poor free-throw shooter, and opponents developed a tactic (dubbed “Hack-a-Shaq”) of purposefully fouling him, knowing that he was more likely to score a field goal than make free throws.

O’Neal was a member of the 1996 United States Olympic basketball team that won the gold medal, the same year he joined the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played with rising sensation Kobe Bryant. While O’Neal maintained his offensive dominance, his teams continued to disappoint in the play-offs. That changed in 1999–2000, when he was named the league’s Most Valuable Player under new Lakers coach Phil Jackson (MVP). At Jackson’s encouragement, O’Neal developed into a more team-oriented player, focusing particularly on his defence, rebounding, and free-throw shooting.

As a result, he led the Lakers to titles in 2001, 2002, and 2003, earning each year’s finals MVP honours. O’Neal was transferred to the Miami Heat in 2004 following years of on-again, off-again feuding with Bryant, which had become a significant distraction within the Lakers organisation. He linked up with the gifted rookie guard Dwyane Wade to lead Miami to the NBA title in 2006. O’Neal’s production was hampered by injuries in the following seasons, and he was transferred to the Phoenix Suns in February 2008.

O’Neal’s playing style clashed with the Suns’ fast-paced game, and despite a strong 2008–09 campaign, he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2009 as Phoenix began its rebuilding phase. He joined with the Boston Celtics in 2010, but his participation was hindered by an Achilles tendon injury. O’Neal announced his retirement following the 2010–11 season. He finished his career with 28,596 points (the seventh-highest total in NBA history at the time of his retirement) and 15 All-Star Game appearances. In 2016, Shaquille O’Neal was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

O’Neal achieved little success as a rapper and actor, appearing in films such as Blue Chips (1994), Kazaam (1996), and Steel (1996). (1997). He provided the voice for himself in the computer-animated feature film The LEGO Movie (2014). His outgoing nature and charm earned him a reputation as a popular pitchman during his career and helped him land a job as a commentator on an NBA television studio programme following his retirement.
