Simon Calder Biography and Career:

In addition to being a travel writer and presenter, Simon Calder (born 25 December 1955) is also the senior travel editor for the British daily The Independent.

Calder became a member of the Woodcraft Folk in 1962 and went on a trip to the Lake District with the club. Calder’s parents concluded that since Gatwick airport was just two miles away, they were in the line of fire for a possible Soviet target the next year when the Soviet Union transported nuclear weapons to Cuba. In order to take a brief vacation in Guernsey, which is located in the Channel Islands, the family relocated there. Calder’s high school, Thomas Bennett in Crawley, required him to take Russian, which he found to be ineffective on frequent school and family excursions to France, according to Calder.

At Gatwick Airport, Calder’s initial employment was as a janitor, and he then worked as a security guard for British Airways. During this time period, he started publishing inexpensive travel guidebooks, with the Hitch-Manual: hiker’s Britain serving as his first publication. The next year, he began studying for a degree in Mathematics at the University of Warwick, while simultaneously indulging his passion for hitchhiking around Europe. He had held the world record for the fastest hitchhiking between Land’s End and John o’ Groats, which he broke in a single day.

Following graduation from university, Calder went on to write a number of books and a series of guides, including the Traveller’s Survival Kit series and Backpacks, Boots, and Baguettes, among other things. It was on the Simon Bates show Studio B15 on BBC Radio 1 in 1980 that he made his debut appearance as a travel expert.

Calder started working as a travel editor for The Independent in 1994, and soon after that, he began hosting for BBC 2’s Travel Show, which he continued to do until the show’s cancellation in 1999. He later appeared on other BBC One series, including Perfect Holiday and Departure Lounge, and provided commentary. Calder presented the last picture of the final edition of the Holiday programme, which had been ongoing for many years. Calder authored an essay for the Independent in 2011 titled “A new era of the train is emerging throughout Europe,” in which he discussed how more competition on the trains was boosting service across Europe.

He continues to contribute to numerous BBC programmes and to other radio and television stations as a travel expert, and he is a frequent contributor to various travel magazines. In addition to hosting The Travel Show, Calder hosted a weekly travel phone-in on the London talk radio station LBC for four years, from April 2008 to April 2012.

Sir Nigel Calder’s son, Calder, is a scientific writer who died in 2003. He is also the grandson of the late Lord Ritchie-Calder. He is the nephew of the late Scottish writer and critic, Angus Calder, as well as the educationalist Isla Calder, who raised him (1946-2000). In 1997, Simon and Charlotte tied the knot in Las Vegas. He is married with two kids (born in 2000 and 2003), and he presently resides in London.
