Simon Reeve Biography and Career:

Simon Alan Reeve (born July 21, 1972) is a British novelist and television presenter who is now located in London. He has written many books and hosted several television shows. He travels the globe filming travel documentaries in remote and underdeveloped locations, and he has published books on topics such as international terrorism, contemporary history, and his personal exploits. Tropic of Cancer, Equator, and Tropic of Capricorn are three BBC television programmes in which he has appeared as a presenter. Novelist of The New Jackals (1998), One Day in September (2000), and Tropic of Capricorn (2001), Reeve is a best-selling author in the New York Times (2007). He has garnered awards from the One World Broadcasting Trust and the Royal Geographical Society, including the Ness Award in 2012.

Reeve was born in Hammersmith and raised in west London, where he went to a local comprehensive school before moving to the United States. Until he began working, he didn’t travel much outside of the country. In the years after his graduation from high school, he worked in a variety of positions such as a supermarket employee, jeweller, and volunteer at a charity store before beginning to do research and write in his free time while working as a postboy for a British newspaper.

Following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, Reeve started producing travel documentaries for the BBC. Reeve’s travel documentaries have been hailed as “the greatest travel television programmes of the previous five years” by Tom Hall, travel editor for Lonely Planet books, and several of his films have earned positive press reviews.

After contracting malaria while travelling near the Equator, Reeve was inspired to become an ambassador for the Malaria Prevention and Awareness Campaign. The WWF’s Council of Ambassadors, which includes Sir David Attenborough and other conservationists, includes Reeve. The WWF is one of the world’s top environmental organisations, and Reeve is a member of the council.

Written and narrated by Reeve, Meet the Stans is a four-part BBC Two and BBC World programme about Central Asia that aired in 2012. As part of the series, Reeve travelled from the far north-west of Kazakhstan near the Russian border to the east to the Chinese border, south through Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to the edge of Afghanistan, and west to Uzbekistan and the legendary Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara, among other places. It was televised on the BBC in 2003, then it was carried on other networks across the world in 2004 and 2005.

Reeve wrote and presented a one-off BBC Two and BBC World documentary, which was recorded within Saudi Arabia and shown on BBC Two and BBC World. From the towns of Jeddah and Riyadh to the enormous Empty Quarter desert, Reeve’s voyage brought him through Saudi Arabia and into the Middle East. Among those who took part were Saudi princes, Islamic militants, adolescent females, and Osama bin Laden’s former closest buddy, among many others. It is first shown on television in 2004.

“Places That Do Not Exist” was Reeve’s award-winning five-part documentary series about breakaway states and unrecognised countries, which aired on BBC Two and other foreign broadcasters in 2005. Reeve travelled to a number of nations for this series including Somaliland, Transnistria (where he was imprisoned by the FSB for spying,’ according to the FSB), Nagorno-Karabakh, Ajaria, South Ossetia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Somalia, Moldova, and Taiwan among others. He also paid a visit to Mogadishu, which is considered to be one of the world’s most dangerous cities.

Equator is a three-part BBC documentary series that premiered in September 2006 and followed Reeve as he travelled across the globe following the Equator. A few of the most hazardous parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Colombia were among the sites he visited throughout his travels. At the 2007 Wanderlust Travel Awards, the series received the Silver Award for best television series. During the course of shooting this series, Reeve acquired malaria.

‘Tropic of Capricorn’ was a four-part BBC documentary series broadcast in 2008, in which Reeve travelled across the globe to search out the southernmost reaches of the tropics zone. The series, as well as the accompanying book, which was also written by Reeve, chronicled his travels across Southern Africa, Madagascar, Australia, and South America, among other places. Reeve travelled across the Andes Mountains, the Namib, Kalahari, and Atacama deserts, among other places.

A four-part BBC Two television series that aired in the United Kingdom from 25 January to 15 February 2009. In addition to leading a team of reporters on exploration trips to some of the most colourful and dramatic areas on the planet, Explore combines travel with current affairs reporting. In the tagline for the series, “Don’t simply visit… explore!” was emphasised. Patagonia to the Pampas, Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Istanbul to Anatolia, and Manila to Mindanao are just a few of the destinations on the itinerary. In this series, topics span from forced farming to fashion goliaths, World Heritage rice terraces to disappearing honey businesses, extreme hunger to extreme football, and all in between. There was a special interview with Imelda Marcos on the tour to Manila, during which she accidentally gave a document with Reeve revealing that her late husband, dictator Ferdinand Marcos, had assets totalling $937 billion in cash stored with a bank in Belgium. Imelda instantly attempted to rectify the situation, but the incident had already been captured on video.
