Simone Biles Biography and Career:

Athlete Simone Biles, full name Simone Arianne Biles (born March 14, 1997, in Columbus, Ohio, United States), is a former American gymnast who was widely regarded as one of the sport’s best. She made history by becoming the first female gymnast from the United States to win four gold medals in a single Games at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and she was the first gymnast in history to win three straight global all-around titles (2013–15).

In the Houston metropolitan region, Biles and her sister Adria grew up in the town of Spring, Texas, after their grandparents Ronald and Nellie Biles adopted them and raised them there. A day-care field trip to Bannon’s Gymnastix piqued Simone’s interest in gymnastics when she was six years old, and she remained there for 11 years under the leadership of her coach, Aimee Boorman. Women’s Junior Olympic National Championships in 2010 saw Biles win gold in the floor exercise and a bronze in the vault before making her way up to the elite level of competition in 2011.

In less than two years, she had risen to the top of the sport. What distinguished Biles was her consistency, her joyful nature, and the high degree of difficulty she integrated into her routines in all four events—vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise—as well as her ability to maintain her focus. After winning the all-around title at her debut international gymnastics championships in 2013, Biles became the first African-American woman to do so in her first year as a senior athlete. She stands 4 feet 9 inches (1.45 metres) tall and has a height of 1.45 metres.

She also won the floor exercise and the vault, as well as the bronze medal on the balance beam. She also won the vault and the floor exercise. She also won a silver medal in the vaulting competition. During the 2015 season, Biles won her third consecutive U.S. all-around title, becoming the first woman to do it since Kim Zmeskal did so in 1992. At the 2015 World Championships, she completed her hat trick of all-around victories by winning the gold medal in the team competition.

She also took home gold medals in the balancing beam and floor exercise, as well as a bronze medal in the vault and a share of the team gold medal. All told, she now has 14 world championship medals to her name, which is the most ever achieved by a female or male gymnast from the United States. In addition, her ten gold medals at the World Championships were the most ever won by a female gymnast in the history of the sport.

Biles, who was too young to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics, was a favourite to win gold at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, which were held in her home country. She met and exceeded everyone’s expectations, first leading the United States to gold in the team event and then taking first place in the individual all-around competition. Biles also won a bronze medal on the balance beam, bringing her total number of medals to five.

In the following years, she took a hiatus from gymnastics and announced in 2018 that she had been a victim of Larry Nassar, a former doctor for the United States national gymnastics team who was convicted of sexually abusing several athletes. Biles returned to competition the following year. She became the first female gymnast in over 25 years to win all five events at the 2018 U.S. national championships, including a record-setting fifth all-around title, during the championships in Atlanta.

At the 2018 Global Championships, Biles earned four gold medals (including another all-around title), one silver medal, and one bronze medal, bringing her career total of medals at that competition to 20. She is now the most decorated female gymnast in the history of the world championships. In 2019, Biles proceeded to make history by winning the Olympic gold medal.

During that year’s global championships, she made history by becoming the first gymnast in more than six decades to earn five gold medals, including one in the all-around competition. Biles also passed Vitaly Scherbo of Belarus to become the gymnast with the most World Championship medals, surpassing him by a single medal (25). Aside from that, she took home five medals at the 2019 United States National Championships, four of which were gold.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no significant events scheduled in 2020. Despite the interruption, Biles appeared to be unaffected. At the 2021 U.S. Classic, she made history by becoming the first female gymnast to land the Yurchenko double pike, the most difficult vault in the sport, during a competition.  She also took home three further gold medals and one bronze medal.

As she prepared to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which were postponed until 2021, there were huge expectations for Biles. She did, however, withdraw from the majority of the competitions owing to “the twisties,” a mental block that occurs when gymnasts lose their spatial orientation when performing aerial moves. Her choice not to compete generated a debate about the number of pressure athletes are under and the impact this has on their mental health. Biles did make it back for the last event, the balance beam, where she took home a bronze medal for her efforts.
