Smokey Robinson Biography and Career:

On February 19, 1940, William Robinson Jr. was born in Detroit, Michigan. He was born and raised in Detroit’s Brewster public housing complex, where he was given the enduring moniker “Smokey Joe” by his uncle Claude. After discovering classic sides by artists like Sarah Vaughan, Billy Eckstine, Muddy Waters, and John Lee Hooker in his mother’s record collection, Robinson began to take an interest in music. Smokey Robinson’s mother passed away when he was just ten years old, and his father, a truck worker, was often away from home. Smokey was raised by his elder sister, Geraldine, and in his early teens, he began singing, often with friends in unofficial doo-wop ensembles.

In 1955, Robinson recruited his classmates Clarence Dawson, James Grice, Pete Moore, and Ronald White to form a singing group called the Five Chimes. After Dawson left and Emerson Rogers joined in 1956, the group changed its name to the Matadors. The following year, Rogers and James Grice also left the band, and Dawson’s sister Claudette Rogers and Emerson Rogers’ cousin Bobby Rogers took their places. Because of their new gender-neutral roster, the Matadors no longer felt their moniker did them justice, and they changed their name to the Miracles.

In 1958, the Miracles added guitarist Marv Tarplin and began making waves in the Detroit R&B scene. His uncle Claude gave him the moniker “Smokey Joe.” He excelled in the classroom and on the football field at his high school. In high school, he formed a doo-wop group he called Five Chimes, which was the start of his lifelong love affair with music. He once shared a Belmont, California, block with Diana Ross.

He credits Nolan Strong and Diablos with sparking his interest in music. In 1955, he put together the Five Chimes line with two other guys, Ronald White and Pete Moore, who he’d known since they were kids. When Bobby Rogers, Emerson Rogers, and Marv Tarplin joined the group two years after its founding, they decided to change the band’s name to Madeiros.

The band eventually changed its name to Miracle. The music industry has valued Smokey Robinson at $150 million due to his many accomplishments.

Many record labels were analyzed by Smokey Robinson and his band, but they were unable to locate a sponsor who would financially support their music. Berry Gordy, a prominent songwriter, was impressed by Smokey’s vocals and songwriting.

In 1959, he enrolled in a university to study electrical engineering. They had already released their first single before he decided to drop out of school to focus on music full-time. Smokey Robinson’s popularity and worth skyrocketed with the release of the first single. Gordy founded Tamla Records, which would ultimately be rebranded as Motown. In a short amount of time, the band’s debut single, “Shop about,” went platinum and became the label’s first official release.

Smokey became well-known as a singer during the ’60s and ’70s. In the 1960s, he worked his way up to vice president of recordings at Motown, but by 1969, he wanted to quit the company to focus on raising his two kids. His final year as a member of the band was 1972.

After a year away from the spotlight, he released his solo album “Smokey” in 1973 to signal his comeback. The second album, titled “Purely Smokey,” was released in 1974, however it was met with mixed reception and some scathing reviews.

The Beatles’ rendition of “Purely Smokey,” which Smokey wrote and sang, is a tribute to the musician who inspired them. He followed that up with 1975’s “A Quiet Storm,” another album release. The CD has significantly expanded Smokey Robinson’s audience. Hits like “Cruisin’,” “Being with you,” and “Just seeing him” are all his work.

In 1959, Smokey wed a fellow club member called Claudette Rogers, who already had a son named Berry and a daughter named Tamla. He paid homage to Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown, by naming his son Berry and his daughter Tamer after two of his early album titles.

Trey, her son with another woman, was born out of wedlock in 1989. They were together at his marriage to Claudette. By 1986, she had told Claudette about her previous marriage, and she filed for divorce. During his separation from his wife, he sang “The Agony & the Ecstacy.”

He practices TM and considers it a worthwhile practice. His mother’s family is responsible for his eye color, which is green. Smokey Robinson is worth the sum of his legendary album’s sales and the salary he received as Motown Records’ vice president. Robinson was a singer, lyricist, arranger, and producer who wrote songs for musicians including Mary Wells, the Temptations, and Marvin Gaye, and who also sang with the Miracles. His compositions perfectly captured both the happiness and sadness of love. The witty and passionate lyrics of Robinson earned him the title of “America’s greatest living poet” from none other than Bob Dylan.

Robinson, a child of the doo-wop period and a devotee of jazz singer Sarah Vaughan established the Five Chimes with his pals in the middle of the 1950s. After a lineup change, the band reformed as the Matadors and attempted to audition for Jackie Wilson’s manager, but were ultimately rejected. However, Wilson’s composer Berry Gordy was so captivated by them that he quickly signed on as the group’s manager and producer. Notably, Gordy became Robinson’s mentor, helping him channel his immense but unformed composing genius, and Robinson, with the help of the Miracles, inspired Gordy to launch Motown Records.

Claudette Rogers joined the group in 1958, and the following year they released “Got a Job” on End Records under their new name, the Miracles. At the Apollo Theater that year, Robinson’s friends Diana Ross and the Primetttes were performing, and Marv Tarplin, the Primetttes’ guitarist, saw the Miracles and offered to help them out. Robinson introduced Gordy to the Primettes, who would later become the Supremes, while Tarplin would go on to become an honorary (but crucial) member of the Miracles.

Robinson and Claudette Rogers tied the knot in 1959, and that same year, “Bad Girl,” which had been licensed to Chess Records, reached number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1960, after the explosive “Way Over There” and the glistening “(You Can) Depend on Me,” came “Shop Around,” the second version of which became a massive smash, peaking at No. 1 on the rhythm-and-blues charts and No. 2 on the pop charts.
