Sophie Auster Biography and Career:

Sophie Auster is a well-known American singer-songwriter and actress born July 6, 1987. When she was 16, Auster released her first studio album. The CD was a product of a cooperation with the musicians from One Ring Zero in Brooklyn. The English renditions of French surrealist poetry written by her literary father, Paul Auster, served as a source of lyrical inspiration for her. The CD received very positive reviews in France and immediately garnered attention from listeners all around Europe.

After the release of that album, she started working on songs with the guitarist and songwriter Barry Reynolds, who had previously collaborated with Rufus Wainright, Marianne Faithful, Antony & the Johnsons, and Grace Jones, among other artists. The tune “Square Moon,” which Barry and Antony Hegarty wrote together and contributed to, has its first recording on this album (Antony & the Johnsons).

Sophie explains, “I tend to go towards subject matter that may be slightly gloomy.” The creative and prolific singer-songwriter Auster, who is just 25 years old, has undergone significant development as a result of the unpublished material that he has been working on for the previous two years.

A significant portion of what I have been doing for the last several years is finding my voice. In 2012, Auster finished the work on her album Red Weather, released in November of that same year. Her style transitioned from the gentle, lounge-like vocal pop on songs such as her 2005 eponymous debut and 2012’s Red Weather to the more blended sounds on 2019’s Next Time, which contained lively and bouncy alt-pop and melancholy, mournful folk music.

Her sound also grew from the soft, lounge-like vocal pop on recordings such as her 2005 eponymous debut and 2012’s Red Weather to the more blended sounds in 2019’s. When Auster was only eight, she began taking ordinary music classes and classical vocal instruction to strengthen her voice. It was around this time that she developed a passion for music. The next year, she debuted as an actress after being cast in the love drama Washington Square, released in 1997.

When she reached her teenage years, she appeared in several more films before enrolling in acting classes at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film School in Manhattan. At this time, she also sang jazz tunes in various venues and clubs across the city. Her self-titled first album was released in 2005, and it included gentle folk-pop music and lyrics influenced by chanson. Recording sessions for the album included One Ring Zero members Joshua Camp and Michael Hearst, who are known for their art rock sound.

Once a family member heard the audio, Auster was pushed to release it formally, and it was finally picked up by the French independent company Nave Records. The recording was originally meant to be a hobby after Auster finished his studies. She devoted the subsequent few years to acting and pursuing musical endeavors and had appearances in American dramas.

The record resulted from a collaboration between Sophie and Michael Hearst and Joshua Camp, located in Brooklyn, who are members of One Ring Zero’s musical combo. Auster first conceived the partnership as a side project he would work on after school and on the weekends. While lieutenant was never meant for widespread public consumption, a family friend who heard the CD was so delighted that she raved about it.

She proposed putting it out on the French label Nave Records as a release option. After its first release in France, the record was rapidly exported to nations across Europe and beyond. Her second album, which she named after herself, is titled Sophie Auster. The edition of Rolling Stone magazine that was published in Spanish in July 2006 had Auster on its cover.

She started collaborating with the musician and songwriter Barry Reynolds in 2007. Reynolds has previously collaborated with artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Marianne Faithfull, Antony and the Johnsons, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Grace Jones. Ashe’s first album was released in 2007. The two quickly became friends and have been working on various projects ever since.

After completing her studies at Sarah Lawrence College and receiving her diploma in 2010, Sophie resumed her recording career. The song that Sophie self-produced and titled “Red Weather” was made available for purchase on Lost Colony Music on November 13, 2012. The most recent full-length album by Auster, Dogs, and Men was released on Sony Red in June 2015.

The album “Dogs and Men” was met with universal acclaim upon its release, and in 2016, Sophie was awarded the top prize in The John Lennon Songwriting Contest for her composition “Little Bird.” After graduating from college in 2010, she started assembling her work for her first self-produced EP, which she had begun composing with British musician and producer Barry Reynolds (Marianne Faithfull, Rufus Wainwright) in 2007. Before that, she had started creating songs with him in 2007.

The album in question, titled Red Weather, was issued by Lost Colony Music at the end of 2012. She then spent the following two years creating songs for her second full-length album, Dogs & Men, which was eventually published in the middle of 2015 via Out Loud Music. The album was met with considerable praise, and Auster was presented with the top prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for the song “Little Bird,” featured on the album.

She started recording her third album in the latter part of that year. It took her and producer Tore Johansson (David Kitt, the Cardigans) two years to complete the writing process, during which time she also worked on other projects. The album, titled Next Time, was released by BMG at the beginning of 2019.
