St. Louis Blues Biography and Career:

A professional ice hockey club headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, that competes in the Western Conference of the National Hockey League. The St. Louis Blues are a member of the National Hockey League (NHL). There have been four Stanley Cup final appearances for the Blues (1968–70 and 2019), and they have won one title (2019).

The Blues were one of six teams that joined the NHL in 1967–68 when the league expanded from a so-called “Original Six.” The St. Louis Blues, led by first-year head coach Scotty Bowman and featured hard-nosed defender Barclay Plager, progressed to the Stanley Cup finals in their debut season but were beaten by the Montreal Canadiens in four games that were all decided by a goal or less.

The Blues won the NHL West Division (which included the six expansion clubs) in each of the next two seasons as well, only to be swept in the Stanley Cup finals by the champion of the East Division, which included the Original Six franchises (Montreal again in 1969, the Boston Bruins in 1970).

The team’s rapid rise to prominence, however, was not sustained, and the Blues were far less successful throughout the 1970s. Between 1970–71 and 1979–80, St. Louis had just two winning seasons and only made it through the first round of the playoffs on one of those occasions.

After winning 45 games and winning the division championship in 1980–81, the Blues were defeated in the second round of the playoffs, despite the efforts of left-wing Brian Sutter and center Bernie Federko. This was the greatest record in franchise history up to that moment. A losing record was achieved six times in the next eight seasons, although the Blues nevertheless qualified for the postseason in each of those seasons.

During the 1987–88 season, the St. Louis Blues acquired Brett Hull, who would go on to become a famous right-wing. Despite the fact that he would go on to score the most goals in franchise history over the course of his ten full seasons with the Blues — and eventually follow his father, Bobby Hull, into the Hall of Fame — he would never take the team further than the second round of the playoffs during that time.

The Blues finished with the best record in the NHL in 1999–2000, thanks to the efforts of right-wing Pavol Demitra and defensemen Chris Pronger and Al MacInnis. However, the Blues were eliminated from the NHL playoffs in the first round by the San Jose Sharks, who were seeded last in the Western Conference that year.

They bounced back the next season, earning a spot in the conference finals, where they fell to the eventual champion Colorado Avalanche in a seven-game thriller. With a third straight playoffs appearance in 2003–04, St. Louis extended their string of consecutive postseason appearances to 25 seasons, which was the third-longest such stretch in league history at the time.

During that time span, though, the Blues failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup finals and only moved beyond the second round of the playoffs on two occasions. The Blues ended their seasons with win-loss records around.500 in the six seasons after the end of the run, although they only made it to the postseason once (losing in the first round of the 2008–09 playoffs).

Head coach Ken Hitchcock joined the struggling Blues after just fourteen games of the 2011-12 campaign. Under his guidance, the Blues went on a 49-game winning streak and captured the franchise’s first division championship in 14 years. As a result, postseason success remained an elusive goal for St. Louis. The Blues, however, were knocked out of the playoffs again that season, and three times after that. To some extent, the Blues had a breakthrough during the 2015–16 season, getting to their first conference final in 14 years, before being eliminated by the San Jose Sharks.

While playing in the 2018–19 season, the St. Louis Blues broke a nearly half-century-long Stanley Cup finals drought in a fairytale manner. St. Louis began the season with the worst record in the NHL, but the team rallied behind interim head coach Craig Berube, a tenacious defense, and stellar play from rookie goaltender Jordan Binnington to finish second in their division at the end of the season.

St. Louis finished the season in second place in their division. As a result, the club won three tightly-fought playoff series, none of which lasted less than six games, and advanced to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in 49 years. While there, the Blues defeated the Boston Bruins in a seven-game series to win their first title in team history. The Blues qualified for the playoffs in both of the following seasons, which were cut short by the COVID-19 epidemic. However, they were eliminated in the first round in both of those seasons.
