Stacey Abrams Biography and Career:

The name Stacey Abrams has become associated with voting accessibility and turnout, having made history by becoming the first African-American woman and the first woman of color to occupy roles in state and national politics, respectively. As a result, Abrams has emerged as one of the most prominent African-American female politicians in the United States today.

Stacey Yvonne Abrams was born on December 9, 1973, in Madison, Wisconsin, to Stacey Yvonne Abrams and David Abrams. Carolann’s mother worked as a college librarian, and Robert worked as a shipyard laborer while she was growing up. Both of her parents took part in the boycotts and marches that marked the civil rights movement as she grew up during that time.

Her mother was thrown off buses when she attempted to sit in the front row, and her father was assaulted and imprisoned as a result of his involvement. Carolyn and Robert raised their six children with a “you-can-be-anything motto” and encouraged them to participate in civic activities. Extensive use was made of family vacations to the polls and outreach tours to prisoners.

A short time in Wisconsin (Abrams recalls just “the cold and the cheese curds”) followed by a relocation to Gulfport, Mississippi was all that the family had in mind. In Gulfport, Abrams spent most of her youth, where she recalls that her family belonged to what her mother referred to as “the gentle poor.” According to Abrams, this meant that the family “did not have any money, but we watched PBS and read books.” Abrams enjoyed reading the encyclopedia for pleasure.

The value of education in the Abrams home could not be overstated. Abrams recalls that her “parents stated you could skip school if you had a doctor’s letter and a surgical scar,” which she believes to be true. Abrams believes that the public school system “saved” her and her brothers’ lives by providing them with an education.

Their family remains tight, and they have a reading club that meets on a regular basis via conference call. Her siblings include an anthropology professor, a federal judge, an evolutionary scientist, and a social worker, and the family stays close.

During Abrams’ junior and senior years of high school, her family relocated to Atlanta so that her parents could attend Emory University’s Theological Seminary. Both were ordained as Methodist preachers after completing their studies. She graduated from high school in 1991 with honors and was named valedictorian.

Abrams and her parents were invited to the yearly valedictorians’ celebration at the governor’s residence, and they journeyed there by bus. The security on duty informed them that they needed to leave when they arrived at the gate. Despite the fact that the error was later fixed, Abrams was left with a lasting impression.

“I don’t remember meeting the governor of Georgia or my fellow valedictorians on that day,” she says, despite the fact that she felt she deserved. That day, the only thing I remember is a guy at a gate informing me that I didn’t belong there.” She vowed to herself that she would never allow someone to make her feel out of place again.

Following graduation, Abrams enrolled in Spelman College, a historically black women’s HBCU in Atlanta. A demonstration against the Rodney King verdict occurred during her freshman year, and she went on to co-found the Students for African American Empowerment, an organization that continues to this day.

A demonstration on the steps of the Georgia State Capital, when they burnt the state flag, which was at the moment overshadowed by the Confederate battle flag, was another something she participated in.

Abrams believes that Confederate insignia should not be displayed in places of public esteem. Despite the fact that the state flag of Georgia was altered in 2003, Stone Mountain—the biggest Confederate monument in the world—remains visible just outside the city limits of Atlanta. Abrams has urged for it to be taken down.

She received a B.A. in interdisciplinary studies (political science, economics, and sociology) from Spelman College “magna cum laude” and was named a Harry S. Truman Scholar, which is awarded to a small number of public-service oriented students each year. She is the first woman to receive the award. Abrams’ education did not end with her bachelor’s degree.

Her Master’s Degree in Public Administration was awarded by the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas in Austin, and her Juris Doctorate was awarded by Yale University. Abrams subsequently went to Atlanta to work as a tax consultant.

attorney. At the age of 29, she was appointed to the position of Deputy City Attorney for Atlanta. Aside from that, she has co-founded a number of enterprises, including a financial-services company in Atlanta.

Abrams was first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2006, where he rapidly established a reputation for collaboration. In 2010, she was elected to the position of House Minority Leader, becoming the first African-American woman to hold the position in Georgia. Abrams campaigned for more educational opportunities as well as the promotion of financial stability.

She has also advocated for criminal justice reform, Medicaid expansion, and a better understanding of mental illness, all of which are influenced by her brother’s experience with mental illness and substance abuse. In 2013, while still a member of the Georgia House, she created a voter registration non-profit called The New Georgia Project. It helped complete 86,000 new voter applications, many of whom came from voters of color.
