Stuart Bingham Biography and Career:

In 2015, Stuart Bingham won the World Snooker Championship, becoming the first Englishman to do so. Bingham was born on May 21, 1976, in London, England. He won the 1996 IBSF World Snooker Championship as an amateur, but he subsequently spent many seasons as a journeyman professional before developing his game and rising to become a top-ranked player in his thirties. He had his first appearance in the top 32 in the global rankings during the 2006/2007 season, and he made his first appearance in the top 16 during the 2011/2012 campaign. At the age of 35, he won the 2011 Australian Goldfields Open, the first ranking title of his professional golf career.

He won his second ranking championship at the age of 38 when he won the 2014 Shanghai Masters, and he followed it up with his first World Championship in 2015, which the British media hailed as “the culmination of an extraordinary shift from journeyman to the king of The Crucible.” Having accomplished this feat, Bingham joins Ken Doherty as the only player in history to have won the World Championship at both the amateur and professional levels.

He has finished second in two additional ATP Tour tournaments, the 2012 Wuxi Classic and the 2013 Welsh Open, and he has finished third in two more ATP Tour events. He has won the non-ranking Premier League Snooker in 2012, as well as the Championship League in 2015, among other titles. Over the course of his career, Bingham has amassed more than 300-century breaks, with three of them being the world’s longest.

In 1999, Bingham advanced to the quarter-final stage of the Welsh Open, defeating world champion John Higgins on the way. Later in the season, Bingham caused a major upset by defeating defending champion Stephen Hendry 10–7 in the first round of the 2000 World Championship, despite being ranked as low as 97 in the world at the time. In 2002, he also qualified for the competition by defeating Nigel Bond in a match. The opening round of the Crucible saw Bingham take against Ken Doherty, with whom he nearly made the sixth 147 breaks of the tournament, but he missed the last pink in an effort that would have been worth £167,000. He went on to lose the match by a score of 8–10 in the end.

During the 2004/2005 season, his finest results were two appearances in the last sixteen of ranking tournaments, including a loss in the China Open final frame decider against Ding Junhui in the final frame decider. He had one of his most consistent seasons during the 2005/2006 season. It was during this competition that he defeated then-world champion Shaun Murphy, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the Grand Prix. He reached the same level of the UK Championship when he was defeated by Joe Perry in the final frame decider. Aside from that, he won the qualification event for the Masters, breaking the record with a 147 break along the way.

After that, he defeated Steve Davis in the preliminary round before falling to Peter Ebdon 4–6 in the finals. The potential of achieving a top-16 ranking position seemed to exist at the start of 2006; however, a loss to Ryan Day in the qualifying round for the World Championship destroyed his hopes of achieving that goal, despite moving up into the top 32 for the first time. After a disappointing season in 2006/2007, he was denied qualification for the World Championship once again, however, he did accomplish the rare accomplishment of winning the Masters qualifying event for a second consecutive season, beating Mark Selby 6–2 in the final.

He had a promising start to the 2007/08 season, reaching the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters, where he was defeated 5–0 by world number one Mark Selby. Following his fourth-place finish in his group at the Grand Prix, he went on to lose his first match in the Northern Ireland Trophy. In the Maplin UK Championship, he managed to make it to the final 16, when he was defeated by Shaun Murphy 9–3 following previous wins over Fergal O’Brien and Steve Davis. He also reached the same level in the Welsh Open, when he defeated Stephen Maguire 5–4 in the last 32 after going down 3–0, but he was eliminated in the last 16 by Joe Perry, who defeated him 5–2.

The victory against Adrian Gunnell qualified him for the World Championship, and he subsequently defeated Steve Davis once more in the first round, this time 10–8 (after having led 8–3 and been pegged back to 8–8), only to lose to Joe Perry again in the second round, this time 13–9. Bingham’s season in 2008/2009 was a relative failure, as he lost his opening match in four of the eight competitions he competed in. In the first round of the 2009 World Championship, he was up against world number one Ronnie O’Sullivan, and he was defeated 10–5.

Before losing 9–7 to Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen in the Quarterfinals of the 2010 UK Championship, Bingham had beaten O’Sullivan 9–6 and then Marco Fu 9–2 in the previous rounds of the competition. Later in the season, Bingham qualified for the World Championship for the second time, this time defeating the previous champion Peter Ebdon 10–8 in the first round. In the second round, he faced Ding Junhui, against whom he performed well to take a 12–9 lead. However, Ding mounted a remarkable comeback to win the match 13–12. In the event that Bingham had won, he would have finished the season ranked somewhere in the world’s top 16.
