Tampa Bay Lightning Biography and Career:

The Tampa Bay Lightning is an ice hockey club headquartered in Tampa, Florida. It is a member of the National Hockey League’s Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference (NHL). The Lightning has won three Stanley Cups in franchise history.

The Bolts are the team’s nickname, and the term appears on the current third jersey. The Amalie Arena in Tampa is where the Lightning plays their home games. Jeffrey Vinik is the Lightning’s owner, while Steve Yzerman is the team’s general manager. Jon Cooper, the team’s current coach, has been in charge since 2013.

The NHL announced its expansion in the late 1980s. Two opposing organizations from the Tampa Bay Area agreed to compete for a franchise: a St. Petersburg-based group led by future Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes owners Peter Karmanos and Jim Rutherford, and a Tampa-based group led by Phil Esposito and his brother Tony, both Hall of Famers.

On paper, the Karmanos/Rutherford team seemed to be the leader. The potential of Japanese support swayed the scales in favor of the Esposito group, and they were given an expansion franchise for the 1992–93 season, along with a group from Ottawa (which became the Senators). New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who resided in Tampa during the year, was one of the team’s limited partners.

Another reason, according to former NHL President Gil Stein, was the Karmanos/Rutherford group’s desire to pay just $29 million before the team could begin play, while the Esposito group was one of the few ready to pay the whole $50 million expansion fee upfront. The team’s administration pulled in star power before they had any players after being handed the franchise. Phil Esposito was named president and general manager, while Tony was named head scout.

The Lightning was regarded to be very close to respectability with a youthful core of players headed by Vincent Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Martin St. Louis, and Fredrik Modin. In 2002–03, however, they came a little early than predicted. As well as the heroics of goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin and scorers like Lecavalier, St. Louis, Modin, Richards, and Ruslan Fedotenko, the young team was headed by a new captain in former prolific scorer Dave Andreychuk.

Throughout the season, the Lightning competed for first place in the Southeast Division with the Washington Capitals. They completed with a 93-point record, surpassing the 90-point barrier for the first time in team history, with a 36–25–16 record. They won the division by a single point, earning them a home-ice advantage against the Capitals in the first round.

Coach Tortorella was selected as a finalist for the Jack Adams Award at the conclusion of the season, but he lost out to Jacques Lemaire of the Minnesota Wild. The Lightning transferred Fredrik Modin and Fredrik Norrena to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for goalkeeper Marc Denis during the offseason in an attempt to replace John Grahame, who had signed with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Free agency Johan Holmqvist, on the other hand, would ultimately garner the bulk of playing time and most of the team’s victories. Palace Sports & Entertainment agreed to sell the Lightning to OK Hockey LLC, a consortium led by Oren Koules, a director of the Saw horror films, and Len Barrie, a former NHL player, and real estate entrepreneur, on February 13, 2008.

The Lightning, like the previous season, were busy at the trade deadline. Vaclav Prospal was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for prospect Alexandre Picard and a conditional draught selection, among other important deals. In addition, the Dallas Stars received goalkeeper Mike Smith, forwards Jussi Jokinen and Jeff Halpern, and a fourth-round selection in 2009 in exchange for previous Conn Smythe Trophy winner Brad Richards and goaltender Johan Holmqvist.

The Tampa Bay Lightning traded veterans Mark Recchi and Olaf Kolzig to the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs, respectively, on March 4, 2009. Matt Lashoff and Martins Karsums, both first-round choices of the Bruins, were traded to the Lightning. The Lightning opened the 2013 season with an above-average performance after acquiring goalkeeper Ben Bishop from the Ottawa Senators in a trade the previous season.
