Tasuku Honjo Biography and Career:

Tasuku Honjo is a Japanese immunologist born on January 27, 1942, in Kyoto, Japan. He is known for his contributions to identifying processes and proteins that play an essential role in the control of immune responses and for his work that led to the creation of innovative immunotherapies used to treat cancer. Together with the American immunologist James P. Allison, Honjo was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their joint contributions to physiology or medicine.

Professor Tasuku Honjo lays the groundwork for the fundamental conceptual framework of class switch recombination in the 1980s. In this study, he proposed a model that explained how antibody gene rearrangement occurs during the class switch. In 1992, he made the groundbreaking discovery that PD-1 is an inducible gene that may be found in activated T-lymphocytes.

This finding contributed substantially to the foundation of the concept of cancer immunotherapy by PD-a-blocking. It was ranked the No. 1 scientific breakthrough of 2013 by Science, which compiled a list of the Top 10 Scientific Breakthroughs of the Year. He then developed Activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) in the year 2000 and proved the significance of this enzyme in class switch recombination and somatic hypermutation.

Professor Tasuku Honjo began his life in Kyoto, which is located in Japan. During his time at the Faculty of Medicine at Kyoto University, he was mentored by two highly regarded members of the chemistry community: first Yasutomi Nishizuka and then Osamu Hayaishi. In 1975, he attended Kyoto University to get his doctorate in Medical Chemistry.

Professor Tasuku Honjo has held positions as a faculty member at the University of Tokyo and the Osaka University School of Medicine, as well as the Head of the Research Department and the Faculty of Medicine at Kyoto University. In further investigations, Honjo and colleagues derived the function of PD-1 as a negative regulator of immune responses. They also discovered that lacking PD-1 was essential in developing autoimmune illnesses like lupus.

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Honjo demonstrated that inhibiting PD-1 in cancer animal models might restore T lymphocytes’ capacity to specifically target and eliminate malignant cells. These results by Honjo paved the way for the creation of anti-PD-1 cancer immunotherapies, such as nivolumab and pembrolizumab, which have now been authorized to treat melanoma and other types of cancer. Honjo was a professor at the immunology and genetic medicine department at Kyoto University beginning in the year 2005.

Throughout his career, Honjo was recognized with several stigious prizes and accolades, including both Kyoto Prize (2016) and the Keio Medical Science Prize (2016). In 2001, he was inducted into the United States National Academy of Sciences as a foreign associate. In 2003, he was inducted into the German National Academy of Sciences, and in 2005, he was inducted into the Japan Academy.
