Terri Clark Biography and Career:

Similar to her contemporaries, Shania Twain, singer/songwriter Terri Clark stormed out of Canada in the mid-’90s and immediately captured the attention of America’s country music business. The difference between Clark and Twain is that, whereas Twain has added pop hooks and elements of rock & roll to her music over the years, Clark has stuck closer to her country roots, even if those roots are of a more contemporary sort than extreme honky tonk. It was in 1995 that she released her self-titled first album, which finally peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Top Country Albums list. She followed it up with a string of successful singles, including the follow-up, 1996’s Just the Same, 2003’s Pain to Kill, and her highest-charting studio album to date, 2005’s Life Goes On, which reached number four on the country chart and was certified platinum.

Clark came into her own with her seventh studio album, 2009’s The Long Way Home, which was her first to be self-produced and self-released. It was also her first time releasing music on her own label. Her self-produced Roots & Wings album, released in 2011, was her second entry on the country chart. Her most recent release, Raising the Bar, was her 11th full-length album and her first appearance in the Top 50 of the independent albums list, which was a first for her.

Clark (born Terri Lynn Sauson) grew up in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and was reared in a musical household. She was born in Montreal in 1968 and raised in Medicine Hat. She grew up in a family of Canadian country music artists, with her grandparents Ray and Betty Gauthier opening gigs for performers like George Jones and Little Jimmy Dickens, and her mother performing folk songs at local coffee shops. Terri grew up listening to her grandparents’ country music CDs and teaching herself how to play the guitar as a kid. For most of her youth, Clark spent her time singing, playing guitar, and listening to country music; she was especially influenced by female performers such as Reba McEntire, the Judds, and Linda Ronstadt.

After graduating from high school in 1987, she relocated to the city of Nashville. When she arrived, she walked into Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge unannounced and asked if she might perform for the guests there. Surprisingly, she made an impression on the club’s management and was offered a position as the house singer. Despite the fact that Clark’s first entrance in Nashville was a success, it took her some time to establish herself in the music business. Her seven-year journey consisted of singing in bars and doing odd jobs while also attempting to secure a record deal. During this period, she met and fell in love with a fiddler called Ted Stevenson, whom she later married. In 1994, she was invited to an audition for Mercury Records in Los Angeles. Following a live performance by Clark, the head of the record company decided to contract the singer.

The summer of 1995 saw the release of Clark’s self-titled first studio album. As a result of its success, Terri Clark was certified gold. The album produced the Top Ten country songs “Better Things to Do,” “When Boy Meets Girl,” and “If I Were You,” as well as many more successes. In promotion of the record, she embarked on a tour as an opening act for George Strait. Clark was nominated for the Country Music Association’s Horizon Award in 1996, as well as the Academy of Country Music Awards’ Best New Female Vocalist award the following year.

She received a slew of Canadian Country Music Awards in 1996, including Album of the Year and Single of the Year. She was also chosen by Billboard magazine as the Top New Female Country Artist of 1995, and she has since released two studio albums. Her second studio album, Just the Same, was released in 1996 and was her first appearance in the Top Ten of the Top Country Albums list with a debut position in the Top Ten. How I Feel, which included the country chart-topping hit “You’re Easy on the Eyes,” was released in 1998 and brought her back to the top 10 of the album chart.

Fearless, another Top Ten country album, was released in 2000, and Pain to Kill, released in 2003, peaked at number five on the country album chart. The following year, Mercury released Clark’s Greatest Hits 1994-2004, which was followed by Life Goes On in 2005. After reaching number four on the country chart, this album matched with Greatest Hits for the distinction of being her highest-charting studio album of all time. The hits collection, on the other hand, rose to as high as number 14 on the Billboard 200, owing to the popularity of the exclusive song “Girls Lie Too,” which became Clark’s second national number one.

In the following years, the singer battled her way through personal and professional issues, eventually leaving Mercury Nashville and launching her own label, Bear Tracks, which was distributed by Capitol Records. Her debut release as a solo artist was the critically acclaimed Long Way Home in 2009, which was followed by the DVD Live at Cedar Creek the following year. Clark signed with the indie label Humphead in the middle of 2011, and Roots & Wings was published in December of that year. In 2012, she released a covers album titled Classic, then in 2014, she released Some Songs, which had just original material. As part of the Chicks with Hits tour in 2017, Clark performed alongside Pam Tillis and Suzy Bogguss, which served as support for an album titled My Next Life, which was finally released but never made it to the market.
