Thomas Christopher Collins Biography and Career:

Cardinal Thomas Christopher Collins was born and reared in the city of Guelph, which is located in the province of Ontario. His father worked as the circulation manager for the Guelph Mercury, while his mother worked as a legal secretary throughout his childhood.

He is the youngest of his three siblings and the only boy in the family. His family house was located behind the Church of Our Lady, which he often visited as a youngster and later worked as an usher there.

Cardinal Collins pondered a career as a teacher or a lawyer, but his English teacher in grade 11 at Bishop Macdonell Catholic High School, Father Newstead, who knew him well and suggested that he think about entering the priesthood, proved to be a profoundly influential figure in his decision to enter the priesthood.

He attended St. Jerome College in Waterloo, Ontario, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from there in 1969. In 1973, he earned a Master of Arts in English from the University of Western Ontario and a Bachelor of Theology from St. Peter’s Seminary in London, Ontario.

Both of these institutions are located in the province of Ontario. In the same year, 1973, on May 5th, he was ordained to the priesthood in the Cathedral of Christ the King in Hamilton by the Most Reverend Paul Reding.

He got his Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in 1978 and his Doctorate in Theology from the Gregorian University in 1986 when he was in Rome studying sacred scripture and the Book of Revelation. During his time in Rome, he specialized in both of these areas.

After serving in a number of academic capacities for a number of years, in 1997 he was given the role of Bishop of Saint Paul, Alberta. After waiting another year, he was eventually elevated to the position of Archbishop of Edmonton.

In 2001, he was given the position of Apostolic Administrator of Saint Paul when he was in Edmonton. He was given the position of Archbishop of Toronto in December 2006, and he was enthroned in that role in January 2007.

Cardinal Collins was elevated to the position of chancellor of the University of St. Michael’s College and the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies in Toronto in the year 2007, the same year that he was made an ex-officio member of the Permanent Council of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.

He serves as the Chair of the Board of Governors of St. Augustine’s Seminary, as well as the Chair of the Board of Directors of Redemptoris Mater Missionary Seminary, Catholic Charities, and Catholic Cemeteries. Additionally, he serves as a Trustee on the Advisory Board of ShareLife. Cardinal Collins was a candidate for and ultimately won the position of President of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario in 2008.

Cardinal Collins has spent his time in Toronto so far serving the worldwide church through his roles as a member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, the Congregation for Catholic Education, and the Commission of Cardinals for oversight of the Institute for the Works of Religion.

The names Alpha and Omega bring to mind this passage. Both the open Bible and the chalice stand for the two primary modes, namely Word and Sacrament, through which we encounter Jesus in the context of the Church.

The red galero (wide-brimmed hat) with 15 tassels on each side is a symbol that is widely recognized as an indication of a cardinal. This symbol was added to the coat of arms to commemorate the tradition that existed prior to the Second Vatican Council of the Pope presenting a red tasseled galero to new cardinals.

Cardinal Collins’ role as the spiritual leader of an archdiocese is represented by the golden metropolitan cross that is placed beneath the shield.
