Following that, Howard moved in with his mother. When Howard was in the sixth grade, he was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Prior to Howard becoming a teenager, Tim Mulqueen, a former assistant coach for the United States under-17 soccer team, recognized Howard’s talent during a single $25 soccer coaching session in the summer of 1991.

He took Howard under his wing and provided him with free soccer instruction. While playing in an Olympic Development Player camp when Howard was 14 and 15 years old, Peter Mellor, a former professional goalkeeper who was now coaching. Soccer National Goalkeeping License for coaches, noticed Howard and identified him as a future star, and he was placed in the Olympic Development Program.

Howard went to North Brunswick Township High School, which is located in North Brunswick. As a midfielder for the soccer team, Howard also excelled on the basketball court, where he averaged 15 points per game and assisted his team in reaching the state finals in his senior year.

He is more essential to me than winning or losing, or even whether or not I am participating in the game. Besides that, everything else is a bonus.” His involvement with Athletes in Action, a mission branch of Campus Crusade for Christ, is another highlight of his life. Howard was selected the MLS Humanitarian of the Year in 2001 for his work with children who have Tourette syndrome, and he was elected to the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Tourette Syndrome Association the following year, as well.

He was named a “Champion of Hope” by the United States Tourette Syndrome Association in 2014 for displaying “tremendous courage” in sharing his story on an international platform, educating the public on a disorder that is so rarely discussed, and encouraging young people living with Tourette syndrome to speak out about their experiences. Howard began his professional baseball career with the North Jersey Imperials before joining the MetroStars in 2009. With his performances, he quickly gained the attention of Manchester United, who signed him as a free agent in 2003. He had some success with the club, as they won the 2003 FA Community Shield, the 2003–04 FA Cup, and the 2005–06 League Cup during his time there, among other honors. Howard, on the other hand, was sent out on loan to Everton in order to get more first-team experience when United signed goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

He subsequently signed a permanent contract with the club in February 2007. Against Bolton Wanderers on January 4, 2012, Howard scored his first professional goal, becoming only the fourth goalkeeper in Premier League history to accomplish this feat.  In 2016, Howard returned to Major League Soccer as a member of the Colorado Rapids. He played for the Rapids for three seasons until hanging up his skates in October of this year. Soon after, Howard was promoted to the position of front-office manager for USL Championship team Memphis 901 FC. He was officially appointed as the club’s sports director in January 2020.

He later returned to professional soccer in March 2020, accepting a deal with the club he co-founded to play as a player for them.  Howard is the most capped goalie in the history of the United States men’s national team, having appeared in 121 games for the team since 2002 until his retirement from international duty in 2017.

He was an unused substitute for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, but he went on to establish himself as the first-choice goalkeeper for the United States’ international tournament games beginning with the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, in which the United States finished as runner-up to Brazil. He was named to the All-Star team in 2010. Howard represented the United States at both the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, starting in all of their matches in both tournaments.
