Timothy Keller Biography and Career:

Timothy Keller and his wife, Kathy, established the Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan in 1989. Mr. Keller serves as the founding pastor of the congregation. For over twenty-five years, he has served as the pastor of a multiethnic church of young professionals that now averages around 5,000 attendees weekly. In addition to that, he serves as Chairman of Redeemer City to City. This organization plants new churches in New York and other major cities worldwide and publishes books and other materials for people of faith who live in urban settings.

During ten years, they assisted with establishing approximately 250 churches in 48 different cities. More recently, over one million copies of Dr. Keller’s books have been sold and translated into 15 other languages. These books include The Reason for God, a bestseller in The New York Times, and The Prodigal God and Prayer: Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God.

Tim was born in 1950, had his early education in Pennsylvania, and received his theological training at Bucknell University, Gordon-Conwell Theological School, and Westminster Theological Seminary. His prior positions include Associate Professor of Practical Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, Pastor of West Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Hopewell, Virginia, and Director of Mercy Programs for the Presbyterian Church in America.

On Sunday, Tim Keller announced that he would again undergo “brutal” therapy for his pancreatic illness and begged for prayers. In June last year, Keller participated in an inpatient immunotherapy experiment at the National Cancer Institute of the US Institutes of Health. He said the research “showed remarkable promise in possibly treating cancer.” Next month, the patient, who is 72 years old, will return to the institution in Bethesda, Maryland, to undergo an additional variant of that immunotherapy on new malignancies.

Keller said that the tumors “are regrettably located in some quite uncomfortable areas,” As a result, the physicians have pushed her and her family to undergo the therapy again, but this time targeting a different genetic marker of the illness.

Since last June was so tricky, we are approaching this with the understanding that we will need a great deal of prayer,” Keller stated on Twitter. “We ask that you pray for our faith and reliance in God, for his providence supervision of the medical preparations that are now being made, and for our desire to glorify God in all that comes our way.

Keller, who had served as the pastor of the Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan for many years, was diagnosed with stage pancreatic cancer IV in May 2020. After undergoing 14 rounds of chemotherapy, he had surgery the next year to remove nodules from his body. He first received immunotherapy treatment at the National Cancer Institute in June 2022.

His son Michael Keller had provided an update, writing, “Things were worrisome for a spell, but God was gracious, working through your prayers and the expertise of the physicians, and today dad is doing much better.” Michael Keller had shared the statement on his father’s Facebook page.

Dr. Keller has said in earlier meetings that according to statistics, 80 percent of those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer pass away within one year. Therefore, he is incredibly thankful and thrilled to be overcoming the challenging odds.

But, the individual who has been compared to a contemporary version of C.S. Lewis is still interested in exploring therapies that have the potential to lengthen the amount of time he spends on earth, and why not? Tim and his wife Kathy have three boys and are happy in their marriage. He savors every moment of his role as a grandpa. In addition to being a prolific writer, he also reads well over one hundred fifty novels per year.

Tim Keller is 72 years old and is currently in the midst of the Lenten season, which is 40 days leading up to the significant events of Holy Week, including the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus; it seems fitting that Tim Keller would be entering this next season of his cancer journey during this time.

The man born in Pennsylvania has spent the past half of his life instructing and explaining the teachings of the Bible to his congregation, readers, and listeners. He has been doing this for fifty years. For all these years, he was also actively and sincerely practicing his religion in front of a large public audience. But, there is something even more profound, moving, and potent at work when faith is tested by fire and a pastor goes into the flames without getting burnt.

In her biography of the Christian missionary R. Kenneth Strachan, published in 1968, Elisabeth Elliot argues that “it is an incredible load which the biographer takes up.” This endeavor constitutes “a judgment”not just on the studied subject but also on the biographer who conducted the research and everyone connected to the topic. Reading such a work is the same as participating in the evaluation to some extent and degree. The reader can mull the issues brought up by the subject’s life.

Despite this, we are inexhaustibly attracted by biographies, not to mention autobiographies, memoirs, interviews, published diaries, collected letters, and anything else that may be categorized as “life-writing.” As we read them, we want, maybe, to get a peek at the inner workings of the human heart and mind, and we seek to wring some significance out of what Elliot refers to as the “careless seemingly, at times, unplanned” occurrences that occur in human existence.
