Tina Turner, whose birth name was Anna Mae Bullock and who was born in Brownsville, Tennessee, United States, on November 26, 1939, is a singer who has had success in the rhythm-and-blues, soul, and rock music genres during the course of a career that has spanned the last five decades.

Turner was from a rural Tennessee family that engaged in the practice of sharecropping. She started her career as a singer when she was a teenager and after relocating to St. Louis, Missouri, she became heavily involved in the rhythm-and-blues scene there. During a performance in 1956 by Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm, she was introduced to Ike Turner and quickly became a member of the act. She started singing under the stage name Tina Turner, and her dynamic stage presence made her the focal point of the event almost immediately. Live performances made the group famous, but it was difficult for them to achieve success in the recording industry. The group was known as the Ike and Tina Turner Revue when it went on tour.

I used to let my anger get the best of me before I would even consider asking questions. The tide began to turn, though, once I became a Buddhist. Instead of making hasty judgments, it would not be difficult for me to maintain my composure and investigate the situation further.

I came to realize that the source of every success is a transformation that occurs inside oneself. The more I learned about Buddhist teachings, the more deeply I delved within myself and cleaned out any attitudes or routines that were getting in my way. And the more I chanted and matched my aims with a genuine desire to bring pleasure to the lives of others, the more I saw a change for the better in my own life. I attribute all of the good changes I’ve experienced in my professional life and in my personal life, from the tiniest to the greatest, to the spiritual practice I’ve been engaged in.

I worked as a nurse’s assistant when I was a teenager, and I also babysat younger children. I’ve always been good with children, and I’ve always had a natural tendency to look out for the welfare of others. My mother had the notion that I would go into the nursing or teaching professions, but I always felt deep down that they weren’t going to be my pathways to take. When I was a kid, I did really like singing and dancing, and everyone often told me how much they liked listening to my singing. But until I was much older, I never really considered pursuing a career as a vocalist in any capacity.

Ike and Tina Turner’s Revue helped me achieve some kind of popularity in the late 1960s. However, at the beginning of the 1970s, we found ourselves in a difficult situation, both emotionally and professionally. I wanted to do anything to help get us out of our professional rut, and I decided to give songwriting a go in the hopes that it would accomplish just that. I began with the subject that I was most familiar with, which was my own life.
