Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. was born in San Mateo, California, on August 3, 1977, as the youngest and only son of Galynn and Tom Brady. The Bradys were a close-knit family who were all sports fans. The Brady sisters (Maureen, Nancy, and Julie) participated in every sport imaginable, including softball, soccer, and basketball. Tommy, as he is known in his family, was always present at their games and cheered them on. Brady begn playing organised football as a freshman at Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, a Catholic all-boys school. By his junior year, he was a starter, and by his senior year, he was attracting the attention of college and pro scouts. Brady completed 236 of 447 passes (52.8 percent) for 3,702 yards and 31 touchdowns during his high school quarterback career. Brady, who was also a star catcher on the school’s baseball team, was recruited to play professional baseball for the Montreal Expos after graduating from high school in 1995. Instead, he accepted a football scholarship to the University of Michigan (U of M) in Ann Arbor.
Brady served as a backup quarterback for future NFL stars Brian Griese (1975–) and Scott Driesbach (1975–) during his first two years as a Michigan Wolverine. He was frustrated by his lack of playing time and considered returning to California at one point. Brady, on the other hand, persevered, and in 1998, his junior year, he earned the starting quarterback position. He went on to earn All–Big Ten Conference honourable mention, Academic All–Big Ten selection (he had a 3.3 grade point average), and set several University of Michigan records, including the most attempts (350) and completions (214) in a single season. Brady also led the Wolverines to a Citrus Bowl victory in 1999 and was named team co-captain that year. He was named team captain in 2000.
Despite his success, Brady was forced to share quarterbacking duties with teammate Drew Henson (1980–) his senior year. Henson was only a freshman, but he had been heavily recruited in both football and baseball, and Wolverine coach Lloyd Carr was concerned that if he did not play, Henson would leave U of M for a pro baseball career. Brady worked even harder and finished the year by throwing the twenty-five-yard pass that gave the University of Michigan a victory over the University of Alabama in the 2000 Orange Bowl. The Orange Bowl, like the Citrus Bowl, is a postseason football match between two college football teams. The Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and Rose Bowl are the four most prestigious bowl games. Bowl games are always played as close to New Year’s Day as possible.
Brady had won twenty of the twenty-five games he had started during his college career. He had good arm strength and throwing accuracy, and he thought he had a good chance of being drafted to play professional football in the 2000 NFL draught. However, things did not go as planned for Brady. He was the 199th player selected in the draught, and he was signed by the struggling New England Patriots. Coaches were wary of Brady, according to sports analysts. They questioned his speed, but mostly why Henson, a freshman, had gotten so much playing time at the University of Michigan over the more experienced senior. Brady arrived at Patriots training camp eager to prove himself.
