Tommy John Biography and Career:
Terre Haute, Indiana, was John’s hometown growing up. He and his friends would regularly play sandlot baseball at Spencer Field or Woodrow Wilson Field as children. John was taught to throw a curveball by Arley Andrews, a former minor league pitcher and a friend of John’s father. At Gerstmeyer High School in Terre Haute, Indiana, John was an exceptional baseball and basketball player. The pitcher had a 28–2 record. John graduated as the valedictorian of Gerstmeyer High School in 1961, despite his involvement in sports.
John’s stutter prevented him from giving a valedictory speech at school. When John was a high school basketball player, he was scouted by several universities, including the University of Kentucky. However, he also caught the eye of Cleveland Indians scout Johnny Schulte, who was concerned that John needed a faster fastball to succeed in the major leagues but believed that his curveball was already a major league pitch. Following graduation, John decided to play baseball and signed a contract with the Indians.
He was assigned to the Dubuque Packers of the Class D Midwest League, where he spent the majority of his time. As a long snapper for the Chicago Bears in 1998, Tamara John wed Patrick Mannelly — who went on to become an NFL star. At Duke University, they first became acquainted. Taylor was just 10 years old when he got a role in Broadway’s Les Misérables in 1992. As did his siblings, he too participated in Little League Baseball. Taylor, who was 28 at the time of her death, suffered a seizure and died of heart failure after taking an apparent overdose of prescription medicines on March 9, 2010. John described Taylor as “the best kid in the world,” yet he suffered from panic attacks and profound abysses.
As a result, he was “wired differently” from everyone else. In an effort to raise awareness about suicide and prevent it, John founded the “Let’s Do It” Foundation. He was a member of the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, California Angels, and Oakland Athletics. Since 1900, he has had the second-most victories (288) among pitchers who have not been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Opening Day starter for the 1966 Chicago White Sox and 1989 New York Yankees, John was known for his longevity. John was signed by the Indians at the age of 18 in 1961 because of his curveball.
It wasn’t until 1963 that he was called up for the first time in his career. Prior to joining the White Sox, he threw for the Cleveland Indians for two seasons. In 1965, he made his major league debut as a starter and was named the Opening Day starter for the Chicago White Sox in 1966. On June 15, 1968, following a brawl with Dick McAuliffe that left him with a concussion, the New York Yankees named him to their first All-Star squad, with a 1.98 earned run average (ERA). Pitching coach Johnny Sain tried to get John to throw a slider more often in 1971, but John ended up with his highest ERA since 1964 and was traded to the Dodgers for Dick Allen.
He led the National League (NL) in winning percentage for the next two seasons after winning 11 games in 1972 with the Dodgers. While playing against the Montreal Expos in 1974, he tore his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) and could have ended his career. That year, Dr. Frank Jobe, the Dodgers’ physician, performed a ligament replacement surgery on John. He was sidelined for the entire 1975 season after undergoing surgery, although he was the first pitcher to return to the field after such an operation. In 2012, one in seven MLB pitchers has undergone Tommy John surgery at some time in their careers. In his first year back after surgery, John’s record was 10–10.
A 20–7 record and 2.78 earned run average led the Dodgers to the 1977 World Series, where they lost in seven games to eventual champions the Red Sox. His 17–10 record in 1978 helped the Dodgers reach the World Series before he signed with the Yankees as a free agent. John had two 20-win seasons with the Yankees in 1979 and 1980, and he was an All-Star in 1978, his final season with the Dodgers, as well. During his career, he appeared in three World Series between the Dodgers and Yankees, all of which ended in defeat. During the 1982 American League Championship Series, he pitched two innings for the California Angels.
In fact, he pitched for the Oakland Athletics for the second half of the season in 1985 after being released by the team. Injuries to Yankee pitchers forced the Yankees to re-sign John in 1986 when he was unsigned. When Yankees legend Phil Niekro announced his retirement in 1988, John became the game’s oldest player, winning 13 games for the team in 1987.
Prior to his retirement in 1989, he had equaled Deacon McGuire’s record of 26 seasons pitched. It’s possible that the Veterans Committee’s Modern Era Subcommittee will choose John, although he hasn’t received more than 31.7 percent of the votes since 1995 (75 percent is required for induction). In the 1990s, he worked as a broadcaster for the Minnesota Twins and the New York Yankees, until taking over as the manager of the Bridgeport Bluefish in 2007. A motivational speaker who formed the “Let’s Do It” Foundation, which aims to raise awareness about suicide and prevent it has been working since his retirement.
