Tony Pulis Biography and Career:

Anthony Richard PulisTony Pulis pic is a football manager and a former professional player from Wales. He is now retired from playing football professionally. Throughout his career as a footballer, he has participated in more than 300 matches for a variety of teams. He was born in Newport, and at the age of 19, he completed the requirements to receive his coaching badge. After another year had passed, he was finally able to get his UEFA “A” license, making him one of the youngest ever professional players to do so.

Pulis began his career as a manager with Bournemouth in the year 1992. After working there for the following two years, in 1995 he moved on to his next position at Gillingham. In the years that followed, Pulis coached many different teams in the English Premier League, including Bristol City, Portsmouth, Stoke City, Plymouth Argyle, Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion, and Middlesbrough. Throughout the course of his managerial career, Pulis has built a solid reputation for producing the needed outcomes while having to operate under constrained financial parameters.

It is a remarkable accomplishment that he has never been demoted in any of his roles as a player, coach, or manager on a sports team. He is an avid fan of the Italian method of playing football, and he has voiced his unhappiness over the reputation he has earned for himself as a survival specialist. Pulis is the son of Jean and Angelo Pulis, and he was born on January 16, 1958, in Pillgwenlly, which is located in Newport, Wales. His father worked in the steel industry. He is one of many brothers and sisters, and one of his brothers is called Ray.

He began his career as a football player with Bristol Rovers, where he attended their school of football excellence in Eastville and got training to prepare him for professional play. In his later years, Pulis acknowledged that his time spent at Eastville laid the perfect groundwork for his subsequent success in the sport of football, both as a player and as a manager.

During his time on the field, Pulis was a defensive player. He made 85 appearances for Bristol Rovers between the years 1975 and 1981, scoring three goals throughout that time. After playing for Happy Valley for the 1981–1982 season, he went back to Bristol and played there for the 1982–1984 and 1983–1984 seasons. Between the years 1984 and 1986, Pulis played for Newport County in 77 different matches.

The year 1986 marked the beginning of his first position at Bournemouth. In the three seasons that followed, he participated in a total of 74 appearances and scored three goals. During the 1989–1990 season, he was a member of the Gillingham organization. He finished his career as a player and coach in Bournemouth, where he was employed for the last two seasons of his career (1990-1992). During that time, he was a part of 16 matches and scored one goal.

The former manager of Bournemouth, Harry Redknapp, departed the club in 1992, which led to Pulis being hired as the new manager of the club. During his stay at Bournemouth (1992–1994), the team’s highest league position was a tie for 17th in the standings of that competition. In 1994, Pulis accepted a managerial position at Gillingham and subsequently resigned from his position at Bournemouth. In the 1995-1996 season, Gillingham Football Club finished in second place in the Third Division thanks to his leadership. During that particular campaign, he was honored as the Third Division’s Manager of the Year.

He was the team’s captain and led them all the way to the final of the 1999 Second Division playoffs, where they were ultimately beaten by Manchester City in a penalty shootout. Pulis was terminated as a result of this, which spurred him to file a lawsuit against Paul Scally, the chairman of Gillingham, for unpaid incentives. The legal dispute was eventually settled outside of court.

Bristol City became his next place of employment. However, he only lasted there for a total of six months before signing a deal with Portsmouth for three and a half years. Portsmouth allowed him to take a leave of absence for a period of four months so that he could resolve the legal dispute with Gillingham. Ten months after being hired as Portsmouth’s manager, he was fired for failing to meet the team’s expectations due to poor performance.

Following his dismissal, Pulis did not have a job for the subsequent two years. Pulis became the new manager of Stoke City in November 2002, succeeding Steve Cotterill in that role. His major responsibility was to ensure that the club remained in the top division during his tenure with them. Following his team’s triumph against Reading by a score of 1-0, he was successful in that respect.

During the 2003–2004 season, Pulis led Stoke to an 11th-place finish in the Premier League. After that, Stoke had a further season in which they ended in the 12th place. Because he refused to play on a squad that included international players, he was sacked in June of 2005.

It was in September of 2005 that he began his employment with Plymouth Argyle. The club was in a precarious position at the moment, sitting just a few spots above the bottom three. Plymouth was able to steadily climb higher in the league standings thanks to Pulis, who ultimately guided the team to a very respectable 14th-place finish.

In 2006, he made his way back to Stoke City, where he remained as manager until 2013. During his time as manager of Stoke, the club finished in second place in the Football League Championship in the 2007–08 season and in the FA Cup in the 2010–11 season. As a result of his leadership, Stoke City Football Club was elevated to the Premier League, which is the highest level of competition in English football.

Pulis served as interim manager of the Premier League team Crystal Palace during the 2013–14 season. During this time, in April 2014, he was honored with the title of Manager of the Month in the Premier League.

In February of 2015, while he was still the manager of West Bromwich Albion, he was awarded the honor of being selected as the Premier League Manager of the Month for the month. Additionally, he was honored as the Premier League Manager of the Season for 2013–2014.

Between the years 2015 and 2017, he was a member of the West Bromwich Albion squad for two seasons. Between the years 2017 and 2019, he served as Middlesbrough’s manager. In the 2016–2017 academic year, Pulis was honored with entry into the LMA Hall of Fame.
