Tracey Emin Biography and Career:

Tracey Emin was born in the county of Surrey, which is located in England. She and her twin brother Paul spent their childhood in Margate, which is located on the coast of Kent. She says that she was pampered “like a princess” when she was living with her mother at a thriving coastal hotel throughout her childhood. Her Turkish grandfather stayed with them for half the week and the other half of the time he spent with his wife and their other children. After a period of time, Emin’s father upped and went, taking all of the family’s wealth with him. As a result, Emin’s mother is now insolvent. After that, the family was compelled to live in abject poverty; Emin noted in later years that while they had two meters, one for gas and one for electricity, they were never able to afford to have both of them on at the same time because they were so poor.

Emin was raped when she was 13 years old; this is something that she said “happened to a lot of females” later in her life. Between the years 1980 and 1982, Emin attended the Medway College of Design for her fashion education after leaving Margate. She became acquainted with the avant-garde figure Billy Childish when they were both attending the same college before the latter was expelled. Emin views her friendship with the eccentric writer, their collaborative work at Childish modest press, and her time spent studying printing at Mudstone Art College as three of the most significant creative experiences that contributed to her development as an artist. 1987 marked the end of Emin and Childish romance, and the same year she relocated to London.

At the Royal College of Art, she earned a Master of Arts degree in painting in 1989 after completing her studies there. After she had left the institution, she went through a time that was very painful for her, during which she had two abortions; as a result of this experience, she destroyed all of the work that she had created while she was attending the Royal College. Stuckism was a reactionary movement that sought to promote figurative painting rather than the kind of conceptual art that Emin was focused on at the time. She influenced Stuckism while she was still coming to terms with her own artistic practice, and it was during this time that she had an influence on the movement. Billy Childish, who had previously dated Emin, established the company in 1999.In the years that followed their breakup, as Emin achieved renown, he remained quite outspoken regarding Emin’s artistic practice. This continued even after they had reconciled.

He was against the art market and, by extension, the success that her work was having, and he remarked, “It is fraught with peril to take things of cultural significance and reduce them to a mercantile use. Both professional football and professional painting have led to the decline of their respective sports. There is now rampant decadence and superficiality, and at times I find myself wondering if maybe we have been given what we deserve. It strikes me as weird that British artists would point to the influence of someone like Marcel Duchamp, who was engaged in anti-art and who made fun of the stuffy, pretentious art establishment. The greatest irony is that now that they are that pompous art establishment themselves, they continue to put up this impression that they are undermining something else.” It is more about opposing the frenzy of conceptual art, and it tried to support the work of figurative artists. Childish own Stuckism movement is more about denouncing conceptual art.

The Stuckism movement is alive and well, and it is well known for staging demonstrations against the Turner Prize on an annual basis to demonstrate its unwavering opposition. Emin’s creative presence provides the foundation for the principles of the Stuckism art movement, despite the fact that the Stuckism art movement is an action against artists such as Emin. Without Emin, the Stuckism art movement would not exist. Not only did she influence the movement via her critique of Childish work, but also by her own artwork and the public’s approval of her work. Childish was one of the artists whose work she criticized. They may be opposed to her, but in order to further their cause, they need the notoriety that her specific type of art brings. Following her relocation to London, Emin struck up friendships with a number of her fellow artists, some of whom would later come to be known as the Young British Artists. These artists included Sarah Lucas and Damien Hirst, among others.

1988 marked the beginning of the collective’s participation in exhibitions; nevertheless, Emin did not join the group’s creative endeavors until the early 1990s. It is common practice to attribute the artists’ “discovery” to the gallerist Charles Saatchi, who has been a fan and collector of the artists’ work from the very beginning of their careers. However, it was artist and writer Michael Corris who first referred to the group of artists with that title in an article that was published in Artform in May 1992. The name of the group was derived from the title of an exhibition that took place at Saatchi’s gallery in March 1992 and was titled “Young British Artists I.” Due to the fact that the term now has a historical connotation, the British artists of that period are often referred to as “YBAs.”In 1993, Emin collaborated with Sarah Lucas to launch a retail establishment known as “The Shop” in Bethan Green, which was located in the East End of London at the time.
