Valtteri Bottas Biography and Career:

After taking over for Nico Hulkenberg as their test and reserve driver in 2010, Bottas became a full-time member of the team in 2011. Having won the 2011 GP3 title, he took a year off from racing before appearing in practice sessions at official F1 weekends in 15 of the 20 events in 2012. Given the prohibition on in-season testing, Bottas said that this was the finest preparation a rookie driver could obtain at the time of the incident. The squad was so delighted with his performance that they decided to replace Bruno Senna with him at the conclusion of 2012.

His first year without a racing start since he started karting at the age of six, the 2012 season was the first time in his career. It was in 2007 that he made the transition from motorcycles to racing cars, coming third overall in the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Championship.

He repeated as champion the following year, and he continued to amaze by winning the Eurocup championship as well. The Australian was tied for the second position with two challengers, and he was 13 points behind second-year driver Daniel Ricciardo with three races remaining. Bottas, on the other hand, won the following two races, and Ricciardo’s triumph in the finale was not enough to prevent the Finn from clinching the championship.

ART, a Formula Three powerhouse firm, was the next stop on his career path for him. He did not win a championship round in his inaugural season, but he did win the very prestigious F3 Masters race, and his continuous points-scoring allowed him to finish third in his maiden season and to be the series’ best rookie of the year.

In the end, it was teammate Jules Bianchi who took the victory, becoming the sixth ART driver to do so in a row. Following the announcement that Bottas will continue with the team for 2010, many anticipated him to follow in the footsteps of Bianchi and other previous ART champions, such as Jamie Green, Lewis Hamilton, Paul di Resta, Romain Grosjean, and Hulkenberg.

However, much to the astonishment of many, Bottas only managed a similar performance in 2010, finishing third in the championship and winning the Masters for the second time. In the end, the Mercedes-powered ART cars were outgunned (and outspent) by the Volkswagen-backed Signature team, whose driver Edoardo Mortara won the race and claimed the championship.

Bottas took a chance on a move to GP3 for the second season of the championship in 2010, hoping to regain some momentum in his professional life. Despite the fact that this was a step down from F3, it placed him in full view of the Formula One paddock at every single race weekend.

He drew the attention of Williams, who gave him his first taste of F1 driving in May of that year during a straight-line aerodynamic test. Bottas took advantage of the chance to strengthen his relationship with the team. According to him in 2010, “When I’m at home, I go to the Williams plant every single day.” “I work in every area for a period of time, assisting the personnel and learning a great deal. In addition, I sit in the simulator once or twice a week.”

Halfway through the season, it seemed that his gamble had been in vain. With eight races remaining in the season, he was in ninth place in the championship. However, once he and ART teammate James Calado figured out the source of their car’s set-up issues, the duo surged to the top of the championship standings. Bottas won a race in each of the last four weekends, edging off Calado to claim the championship by one point.

Having made one odd career move after another, Bottas decided in 2012 not to compete at all at the Formula One level (a move to Formula Renault 3.5 was explored but ultimately rejected) and instead concentrate on participating in F1 practice sessions. He made all of his 15 outings in the vehicle driven by Bruno Senna, and season-long rumors that he would replace Senna were verified in late November when he was named Senna’s replacement. The team’s principal and founder, Frank Williams, remarked, “Valtteri has been a member of the Williams family for three years now, and I know that our racing engineers and others in the paddock think very highly of him.”

It was evident during Friday practice in 2012 that he has the capacity to fast acquire knowledge and that he is capable of quickly becoming familiar with a new track. Bottas has benefited from the advice and support of two-time world champion and fellow Finn Mika Hakkinen on his journey to Formula One, as well as the leadership of Didier Coton and Toto Wolff along the road.
