Vegas Golden Knights Biography and Career:

In the National Hockey League, the Vegas Golden Knights are an American professional ice hockey club headquartered in the Las Vegas metropolitan region that competes in the Western Conference (NHL). In its first season, the squad was victorious in the conference championship (2018).

The Golden Knights were established as an expansion franchise in June 2016 as a result of a decision by NHL owners to expand the league. In the next season, the Golden Knights’ roster was constructed via a draught of unprotected players from other NHL clubs, and the team started playing during the 2017–18 NHL regular season.

Despite the fact that the Golden Knights were selected in a highly regarded expansion draught, expectations for the team were low heading into the season (notably goaltender and three-time Stanley Cup winner Marc-Andre Fleury). Nonetheless, the club surprised even the most hopeful onlookers by finishing with the fifth-best record in the NHL and winning the division championship during the regular season against the odds.

The Golden Knights then dominated the Western Conference playoffs, losing just three games on their way to clinching the conference title and earning a spot in the Stanley Cup finals. Despite the fact that the Vegas Golden Knights were given a 500–1 chance of winning the Stanley Cup at the start of the season, the club upset the Washington Capitals in the first game of the Stanley Cup playoffs, winning 6–4 over the Capitals.

After that performance, Fleury was unable to get a read on the Capitals, and the Knights were eliminated from the playoffs in five games. In 2018–19, the Vegas Golden Knights returned to the postseason, although they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

The franchise’s outstanding performance continued in the next two seasons, both of which were cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Vegas Golden Knights finished first in their division in 2019–20 and progressed to the conference finals, where they were defeated by the Dallas Stars. Next season, the Knights advanced to the Stanley Cup semifinals—a playoff round that was introduced as part of numerous pandemic-related modifications to the NHL—but was beaten by the Montreal Canadiens in a shootout.

After announcing the commencement of the expansion process on June 24, 2015, Las Vegas seems to be the front-runner in the race for the top spot. More than 13,200 season-ticket deposits have been collected for the multipurpose arena currently under construction near the Las Vegas Strip, and Commissioner Gary Bettman has made no secret of the league’s interest in becoming the first major pro team to play in this growing desert town — while also acknowledging the risks associated with entering another non-traditional market and a gambling mecca.

A confirmation from the National Hockey League on July 21, 2015, that Bill Foley’s application for a Las Vegas expansion club has been received. On August 5, 2015, the NHL announced that the city of Las Vegas has been asked to proceed to Phase II of the league’s expansion bidding process. As a result, the proposal was forwarded to Phase III, which concluded on September 4. Bill Foley and Quebecor representatives met with the NHL’s executive committee in New York City on September 29 to pitch their separate offers.

But at a news conference after the NHL’s Board of Governors meeting, Commissioner Gary Bettman noted that while the league continues to investigate the prospect of expansion, no timeframe has been set for making a decision. Commissioner Bettman also said that the Board of Governors would need to approve the expansion with a three-quarters majority vote, but that the members of the executive committee would first have to submit a proposal to the full board of governors. On June 22, 2016, the Associated Press reported that Las Vegas has been awarded an NHL expansion franchise and that the parameters of the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft were being finalized. The league owners’ meetings were scheduled to begin on June 22nd.

In spite of the fact that Reno and Las Vegas have historically had (and continue to have) minor-league teams in a variety of sports, this will be the first professional sports team from one of the major professional sports leagues to play in Nevada; its only potential competition would be the Oakland Raiders, who are also considering the state as a potential relocation candidate for their National Football League (NFL) franchise. Despite the fact that the Raiders were granted approval to move to Las Vegas for the 2020 season after the building of a new stadium in the spring of 2017, they will remain in Oakland until that time.

General manager George McPhee was appointed to the position on July 13, 2016, marking the team’s first season. The Washington Capitals hired McPhee as their general manager in 1997, and he stayed there until 2014. Prior to that, he worked as a special adviser to New York Islanders general manager Garth Snow.

On November 22, 2016, Bill Foley, George McPhee, and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman took part in a ceremony outside the T-Mobile Arena to announce the team’s name, logo, and colors. The club announced on May 16, 2017, that they would be affiliated with the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League for the 2017-18 season. This is the first time the franchise has done so.
