Victoria Aveyard Biography and Career:

The young adult fiction written in the United States by Victoria Aveyard. The Red Queen series is perhaps what brought her the greatest notoriety.

In 2012, Aveyard received her degree in screenwriting from the USC school. She was able to get a publishing contract for all three books in the Red Queen series. Universal Pictures acquired an option to purchase the film rights.

Aveyard related how, during her time as an intern at a production company, she was entrusted with perusing self-published novels on Amazon in order to determine whether or not there was anything to option. “I came to the realization that everything negative, as well as everything good, had already been gone.” She made the decision to put her hand into writing.

She describes herself as a complete movie nerd and lists the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Jurassic Park (she watched it when she was 3 years old), Star Wars, and Independence Day (“the ultimate summer blockbuster”) as some of her favorites. She claims that X-Men was the source of inspiration for the novel. “The X-Men and the tale of mutants being repressed have always captivated me, but one hundred years from now, mutants will be in charge of the show.”

At a gathering for USC students held at Benderspink, producers urged Aveyard to push her concept further, particularly as a book. After she received her degree, she decided to move back in with her parents in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, and spend the next year writing the book. After it was finished, in January of 2013, Benderspink assisted in placing her with a literary agency at New Leaf, and by April of that same year, she had a contract for both the book and the movie.

Red Queen, the first book in Victoria Aveyard’s dystopian fantasy series, was an instant smash upon its release and debuted atop bestseller lists in only its first week of availability. Realm Breaker is a young adult high fantasy book written by Aveyard and it is the first book of a trilogy. Aveyard is hopeful that Realm Breaker will be as successful as her previous work. PW sat down with Aveyard to discuss her intentions for the next season as well as the demands of success.

This time around is a bit more terrifying since I am aware of the potential traps and I am aware of the number of potential threats to avoid. But not really in terms of the process. We decided several years ago that 2020 would be the year that I would take a break from publishing a book. This decision was made because I wanted to spend as much time as possible working on Realm Breaker so that I could give it the best possible ramp and ensure that it was as strong as it could be. Since I didn’t have a book coming out at the height of the epidemic, I consider myself really fortunate in that regard.

Ultimately, Realm Breaker was made feasible by the success of Red Queen. Now that the pressure was off, I could go for broke, write what I wanted to write, and follow the wind wherever it took me. But there is also a great deal of pressure to deliver, and claims like, “Okay, everyone! Amazing books, a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Repeat that, would you?” Of course, you want a similar reception to that of Red Queen, and you hope that it finds an audience that is as enthusiastic and appreciative as the one that embraced that film. In addition, you feel responsible to your current audience.

In the past, I had a fuzzy thought that “Okay, I’m going to build the dream adventure that I always yearned for when I was a child.” That’s exactly what I went and did. I accepted the challenge and wrote about what happens when the chosen ones fail to save the day. I never once thought, “Oh, maybe I’m going in the wrong direction here.” I guess the seed of the idea germinated in my mind sometime after War Storm but before Broken Throne.

In my mind, it has mostly been doing nothing except taking up valuable real estate. You will never stop having ideas, but the ones that are worth pursuing will stick with you. Having a deadline and another project to work on at the same time has this benefit. I’ve had so many that have come and gone, but this is one of just two that have stuck with me across years and years of having to push them away. Countless people have come and gone throughout my life. Consequently, I realized, “Okay, this is something that I need to do.”

Absolutely amazing stuff happened there. I really wanted to start again, to have a clean slate upon which to build a new world. In comparison to Red Queen, which also takes place in a future Earth, but is more of a hybrid, Realm Breaker is in a class of its own. It’s set in an alternate timeline and heavily relies on fiction. It was something I had always wanted to do, even as a kid, and definitely as a teenager: draw maps of imaginary lands and imagine new ones. And now I’m doing it as a career and being paid for it. The experience of watching this series is like to realize a lifelong ambition.
