VideoGameDunkey Biography and Career:

An American YouTuber noted for his crass humour and video game critique, Jason Yevgeniy Gastrow (born January 30, 1991), also known online as videogamedunkey or just dunkey, is well-known for his skits and video essays on the platform. Seven million people subscribe to Gastrow’s YouTube account as of February 2022, and his videos have amassed over three billion views. Since 2003, Gastrow has been a video editor. \Using the alias “Meatwadsprite,” Gastrow produced Flash animations that he posted on the website Newgrounds.

As he stated in his review of the 2017 video game Cuphead. Examples include his first video, “Great Yoshi Migration,” and a spoof of the Village People song “Y.M.C.A.”  Gastrow claimed in an interview that when he was younger, he wanted to be an animator. With a video of him completing a Battletoads speedrun from 1991, Gastrow launched his current YouTube account, videogamedunkey, in 2010. Gastrow had another channel before he discovered videogamedunkey. Gastrow stated that he and a friend were playing Left 4 Dead when they came up with the name “videogamedunkey.”

After entangling his friend in the game, he “told him to pat a donkey or something,” and after telling him to say “go go magic dunk,” promised to release him.  The videogamedunkey channel had 1.8 million members in September 2015, which increased to 3.5 million in September 2017 and 5.2 million in March 2019. The combined views of Gastrow’s videos exceed three billion.  Outside of YouTube, Gastrow maintains accounts on Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter. He co-owns an internet store called Dunkey’s Castle with his wife Leah.

On his channel, Gastrow mainly discusses video games, posting reviews, playthroughs, montages, and video essays. He has reviewed movies like The Shining. In the early years of his channel, Gastrow gained a lot of notoriety for his coverage of the 2009 multiplayer online battle arena game League of Legends. In the opinion of Kotaku’s Yannick LeJacq, Gastrow “had a distinct spot in the League of Legends universe for routinely creating some of the best, and undoubtedly the funniest, material in the game’s enormous community.”

He stopped producing League videos, though, in September 2015 after being barred for engaging in “toxic” behaviour, which included insulting teammates repeatedly in-game.  Additionally, Gastrow is credited with making PlayStation 4 games Knack (2013) and Knack II (2017) the subject of numerous jokes to the point that they “became the internet’s favourite punchline.” In his initial agreement, Gastrow agreed to have a significant portion of his advertising revenue taken by Machinima, Inc. Gastrow made as many videos as he could in 2013 as his revenue started to decline.

He had recently signed a pricey apartment lease and was feeling anxious. He changed from Machinima to Maker Studios, which had promised to cover the remaining balance of the lease but had never done so and had been taking more money than Machinima. In exchange for Gastrow creating four films for Xbox Live’s Summer of Arcade, Microsoft promised to pay for the first two months of his lease. Gastrow’s first video, in which he berated the game he was playing, was uploaded not long after Microsoft removed the video and cancelled the arrangement.

After that, Gastrow worked for Curse LLC, which he praised.  As “perhaps the highest-earning cultural pundit with connections to Madison,” Gastrow is said to make up to US$1.7 million annually. Gastrow made a statement in a video he released in December 2020 that he would cease filming “excellent videos” and instead adopt a daily regimen. Then he started posting shorter films every day that parodied his goals and had clickable names. For instance, in a fictitious Minecraft video, Gastrow was depicted as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Steve default image.

The change in content style, according to his wife, was caused by his “frustrations with the current YouTube scene and worry about the future,” as his and other channels’ past curated content has been “overshadowed by the latest trends and low effort things” from larger channels. Polygon noticed that the videos did better than Gastrow’s earlier content, assuming that he was highlighting the issues with YouTube to raise awareness of them and would soon switch back to his regularly produced content.

When Kanye West’s album Donda was released, the song “Remote Control” contained an exact sample from the animated short film Strawinsky and the Mysterious House (2012), causing fans to speculate that West’s team had seen Gastrow’s live stream in August 2021 when he joked that the album would feature music from the film.Gastrow claims that he occasionally develops a narrative for a video and records voice-overs during post-production, while other times he records as he plays. In an interview, Gastrow said that he “would try to edit out the funniest parts” of his videos for League of Legends and Overwatch (2016).

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011) is played by Gastrow in his most popular video, “Ultimate Skyrim,” while using a variety of user-made mods to the point where the game is broken. As sources of inspiration, Gastrow has mentioned friends, Adult Swim shows like Tim & Eric, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. He has also said he likes to watch videos by YouTubers ProJared and Gaming Historian. Gastrow is an example of “new games critique,” a reviewing strategy influenced by New Journalism, according to Reid Kurkerewicz of Tone Madison.

Although Gastrow makes mostly amusing videos, he also produces serious ones.  According to one description of Gastrow, she is a “fierce consumer advocate and a thoroughly sceptical of corporate marketing machines.” For example, he has criticised Microsoft for its business tactics, notably the termination of their Summer of Arcade partnership, and Nintendo for demonetizing his review of Super Mario Odyssey (2017) based on copyright concerns.

Gastrow criticised websites like IGN in his 2017 video “Game Critics” for their centralised perspectives, subpar writing, “the questionable ethics of creating partnerships with the firms [they’re] meant to cover,” and the gap between critics and audiences. On January 30, 1991, Gastrow was born.  He has resided in Madison, Wisconsin, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The mother of Gastrow teaches second grade. In September 2019, Gastrow wed Leah Bee, a fellow YouTuber. Gastrow is frequently mistaken for being black on the channel, which Bee attributes to his voice and the fact that he hardly ever reveals his face in videos.
