W. Craig Jelinek Biography and Career:

Walter Craig Jelinek was born on August 8th, 1952 in Los Angeles County and grew up sixty miles north of downtown Los Angeles in a tiny charter city called Lancaster. At the height of the cold war, his father assisted in the development of B-70 bombers, which were nuclear-armed, deep-penetration strategic bombers intended for the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command and maybe a calamitous fly over the Soviet Union. That is, until the programme was cancelled in 1961, at which point Craig’s father became involved in the construction of B-1 bombers, which are supersonic variable-sweep wing, heavy bombers intended for duty by the US Air Force until 2036.

Raised in the high-desert shadows of Edwards Air Force Base, this young man graduated from Antelope Valley High School in 1970 and chose to stay a few years longer to obtain an associate’s degree at a local junior college. He began his career as a part-time food stocker at the Fed-Mart franchise in Lancaster.

Following one fateful shift, he returned home to his father shouting about how politicians were impeding defence manufacturing, hence impeding his own labour chances. “Do not enter the aviation business, son,” he urged, before delivering many memorable comments to the future chief executive. “Are you aware of what? People will always require food.”

Craig Jelinek eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from San Diego State University in 1975. He elected to continue climbing the Fed-Mart management ladder, eventually reaching the position of operations manager for the company’s Los Angeles division. Sol Price — a pioneer of the “warehouse store” retail strategy – controlled the company and concurrently employed another key decision-maker, Jim Sinegal, who subsequently launched Costco in 1983.

Hugo Mann, a German investor, acquired Fed-Mart in 1981, opting for an aggressive takeover with ambitions for quick expansion. However, the company began to lose money in the early 1980s, which resulted in store closures primarily outside of California. Mann eventually dissolved the business in 1982 and renamed the company Sunbelt Realty, despite the fact that he retained land titles to the remaining forty-six Fed-Mart locations. Thirty-five of those properties were leased to Target, while another dozen or so were leased to Ralph’s Grocery Stores, leaving one Craig Jelinek scrambling for a new employment in the aftermath.

He resumed his career not far from where he left off: in the managerial ranks of Gemco, a membership department store chain centred in Orange County and a subsidiary of Lucky Stores. Jelinek left the company after only two years, still in his early thirties, after learning about a promising wholesale venture founded by a former colleague. Perhaps he also interpreted some concerning writing on the Gemco walls, given that Lucky Stores declared in 1986 that they would close the cheap chain by the end of the year. Subsequently, several of the sites were sold to Target, displacing 9,000 employees.

He gained further experience during his two years at Gemco, where he attempted everything from keeping purchased groceries until members finished shopping to offering free babysitting services while an adult walked the store. Soon after joining Costco in 1984, Craig Jelinek assisted with the opening of the company’s sixth warehouse in Tukwila, Washington; by the start of 1985, they had expanded to nine Costco sites in five states, servicing over 200,000 members.

Not to add, 1985 would be the year they opened their first hot dog cart outside a San Diego warehouse, selling a hot dog and a soda for $1.50 — a famously beloved price that has remained constant throughout the decades. “Believe me, that [price] will never change,” Jelinek vows. “If I have to personally subsidise it, nothing will change.”
