W. Kamau Bell Biography and Career:
Walter Kamau Bell (born January 26, 1973), professionally known as W. Kamau Bell, is a stand-up comedian and television host from the United States. Since 2016, he has presented the CNN series United Shades of America, and from 2012 to 2013, he co-hosted the FXX television series Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell. He co-hosts the podcasts Denzel Washington Is The Greatest Actor Of All Time Period with Kevin Avery and Politically Re-Active with Hari Kondabolu.
Bell was born in Palo Alto, California, and lived in Alabama, Boston, and Chicago before moving to Chicago. He is the sole child of Walter Bell, former Insurance Commissioner of Alabama and Chairman of Swiss Re America Holding Corporation, and author Janet Cheatham Bell, who created a self-publishing company.
Between the ages of five and twelve, Bell lived in Boston’s Mattapan district. Bell attended the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and then dropped out of the University of Pennsylvania. He afterwards pursued a career in comedy.He is a first cousin once removed of N. K. Jemisin, a writer of speculative fiction.
After establishing himself as a San Francisco-based sociopolitical comedian and community activist, Bell co-founded the comedy collective Laughter Against the Machine and has appeared on a number of prominent podcasts and publications, including WTF with Marc Maron, Citizen Radio, and Current TV’s The War Room with Jennifer Granholm, for which Bell served as a regular correspondent.
In 2007, he published his debut comedy album, One Night Only. Additionally, in 2007, he produced a one-man show named The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About An Hour, which he updates on a regular basis.
Face Full of Flour, his follow-up album, was published in 2010 and was awarded one of iTunes and Punchline Magazine’s Top 10 Best Comedy Albums of the Year. He created the blog “Kamau’s Komedy Korner” for the San Francisco Weekly from 2011 to 2012. Bell was named the finest comedian in San Francisco in 2012 by the SF Weekly, the San Francisco Bay Guardian, and 77 Magazine.
Semi-Prominent Negro, his debut stand-up comedy television special, premiered on Showtime on April 29, 2016, and his third full-length album with the same title was released on Kill Rock Stars on September 30, 2016.
Bell hosted a weekly stand-up comedy television series, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, on FX and later on FXX from 2012 to 2013. Chris Rock’s show featured observational comedy, comments on social and political topics, and celebrity interviews. Bell relocated to California from New York in November 2013 following the cancellation of the show.
He is presently the host of CNN’s Emmy-winning documentary series United Shades of America, which began on April 24, 2016 and has been renewed through 2021. The series has received four Emmy nominations, in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Bell was also a 2017 and 2018 Outstanding Host nominee. Bell is the show’s Executive Producer and has won three Creative Arts Emmy Awards for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
In 2018, United Shades of America was revived for a third season. The show’s premiere aired on April 29, 2018. The season was comprised of eight episodes. On July 1, 2018, the final episode, titled “Native Hawaii,” aired.
