Washington Capitals Biography and Career:

The Washington Capitals are an American professional ice hockey club headquartered in Washington, D.C., that competes in the National Hockey League’s Eastern Conference (NHL). The Washington Capitals have won two Eastern Conference titles (1998 and 2018) and one Stanley Cup in their illustrious history (2018).

A terrible initial season followed the Capitals’ formation, as they posted an 8–67–5 record in their first season of existence. The team’s winning percentage of.131 during that season still stands as the poorest in NHL history. The Capitals made small improvements during the next several seasons, but they still ended in last or second-to-last place in their division in each of the next seven seasons after that.

The 1982–83 season was the first time the “Caps” finished with a winning record and qualified for the playoffs. Right-wing Mike Gartner, together with defenseman Larry Murphy and Rod Langway, guided the squad to five straight second-place division results between 1983–84 and 1987–88, including a championship in 1986.

Capitals fans were ecstatic when Washington won its first division championship in 1988–89 and advanced to the conference finals in 1989–90, but they were disappointed when they were unable to move any farther in the playoffs until the mid-1990s.

When the Washington Capitals were led by right-wing Peter Bondra and goalkeeper Olaf Kolzig in 1997–98, they won their first conference championship and advanced to the Stanley Cup playoffs. In the four seasons after their finals participation, the club recorded winning records, but they were unable to go beyond the first round of the playoffs in any of those seasons.

Alex Ovechkin was selected by the Washington Capitals in 2004. While he guided the Capitals to four consecutive division titles between 2007–08 and 2010–11—including the league-best record in 2009–10—and another division championship in 2012–13, he also guided them to postseason disappointment, as they failed to advance past the second round in six consecutive postseason appearances.

The Capitals’ string of consecutive playoff berths came to an end in the 2013–14 season, but they bounced back the following season with a second-place divisional finish in the NHL. Washington, on the other hand, continued its recent history of snakebitten postseason runs by losing a thrilling second-round series to the New York Rangers, despite holding a three-games-to-one advantage. The series was decided by a single goal in each of the seven games, which was the most in the NHL this season.

The Washington Capitals seemed to be on the verge of breaking through in 2015–16 when they established a club milestone with 56 victories and finished with the best record in the National Hockey League. Washington, on the other hand, was ousted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round of the playoffs in six games, suffering one-goal defeats in each of the six games in the series.

It was the Capitals’ third consecutive postseason exit, as they finished with 55 victories in the regular season but were ousted by Pittsburgh in the second round of the playoffs for a second consecutive season, this time in 2016–17.

The Capitals finally broke through during the Ovechkin era in 2017–18. Washington overcame many of its previous postseason demons during those playoffs, including rallying from a 2–0 series deficit in the first round, finally defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round, and then capturing its first conference title in 20 years (after a nail-biting seven-game series against the Tampa Bay Lightning) to earn a berth in the Stanley Cup finals.

The Washington Capitals won the Stanley Cup by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights, who were in their first season of existence. The Capitals won in five games to claim the championship. With the triumph, not only did the Capitals claim their first championship in their 44-year existence, but they also claimed their first major professional sports championship in more than a quarter-century.

The Conn Smythe Trophy was presented to Ovechkin for being the most valuable player in the playoffs. The Stanley Cup triumph, however, did not put a stop to the franchise’s recent history of early postseason flameouts: the Capitals won their fourth straight division championship in 2018–19 but were defeated in the first round of the playoffs.
