William Hague Biography and Career:

In 2011, he was appointed Foreign Secretary under Prime Minister David Cameron. William Jefferson Hague, Baron Hague of Richmond (born March 26, 1961, Rotherham, Yorkshire, England) is a British politician who served as leader of the Conservative Party from 1997 to 2001 and as foreign secretary under Prime Minister David Cameron from 2010 to 2014.

Hague was born into a family that owned and operated a modest soft-drink manufacturing company. He went to local schools, like John Major, his immediate predecessor as Conservative leader, but not like the majority of notable Conservatives in the country today. By the age of 12, he had made a commitment to following politics, and at the age of 16, he delivered his first speech at a Conservative Party convention. The convincing assault on the former Labour government by a 16-year-old youngster with a noticeable northern accent grabbed the media and pleased the Conservative leader, Margaret Thatcher, who was listening in on the broadcast.

Hague studied philosophy, politics, and economics at the University of Oxford, where he was named president of the Oxford Union debate organization and graduated with honors in philosophy, politics, and economics. Soon after graduating, he began working as a management trainee for Shell Oil Company, but a year later he was hired by management consulting firm McKinsey & Company.

As a result of his selection to fight a by-election in the “safe” Conservative seat of Richmond in North Yorkshire in February 1989, he rose up the ranks to become parliamentary private secretary to the then chancellor, Norman Lamont, within two years after joining the Cabinet Office in London. The appointment of Hague as Secretary of State for Wales by Prime Minister John Major in 1995, when he was only 34 years old, made him the country’s youngest cabinet minister since Harold Wilson in 1947. In spite of the fact that he had no prior links to Wales, Hague gained the respect of his new constituents via his compassion, sense of humor, and intellect.

Following the Conservative Party’s election setback, the worst since 1906, at the hands of a resurgent Labour Party led by Tony Blair, Major announced his retirement as leader of the Conservative Party in May 1997. While Michael Portillo, one of the individuals commonly expected to take over as leader, had lost his seat in the election and was thus out of the race, other candidates from the party’s right side also faced opposition. At age 36, Hague’s center-right platform, which included opposition to transferring additional authority to European Union (EU) institutions (a viewpoint that was popular among the Conservative rump), served as a reasonable middle ground. Hague was elected leader of the Conservative Party on June 19, 1997, on the third ballot, making him the country’s youngest major political party leader in more than 200 years.

After that, Hague went about resurrecting the fortunes of his party. To increase internal democracy inside his party, he proposed a series of changes that are comparable to those undertaken by Labour in the 1980s and early 1990s. These reforms include allowing local party members a role in future leadership elections. At his first party conference as Conservative leader, Hague attempted to soften the party’s image by pledging support for programs that are more empathetic toward the poor and vulnerable. “Understanding and tolerance of people making their own judgments about how they conduct their lives” were equally important to him, as was recognizing the right of individuals to be in same-sex partnerships or to birth and raise children outside of marriage. When Hague delivered his address, he signaled a significant rupture with the Thatcher era’s rigid “pro-family” ideals.

Despite these efforts, the Conservatives suffered a humiliating defeat in the 2001 general election, prompting Hague to resign as party leader. Iain Duncan Smith was chosen to take over as Prime Minister, and Hague was relegated to the backbenches. In 2005, David Cameron appointed Hague to the position of shadow foreign secretary, bringing him back to the forefront of British politics. Following his reelection in the 2010 general election, Hague was appointed foreign secretary in Prime Minister David Cameron’s cabinet, following Cameron’s confirmation as prime minister in May of that year.

Understated pragmatism defined his term in that position, and the mild Euroskepticism that Hague had espoused as Conservative leader was overshadowed by those within the party who desired to depart from the EU completely during his time in office. In July 2014, as part of a bigger cabinet reshuffle, he resigned from his position as Speaker of the House of Commons and was appointed Leader of the Opposition. Hague resigned from the House of Commons in May 2015, and he was elevated to the status of a life peer in October.
