In the recently published study, researchers looked at the medical records of 1,621 people who did not have breast cancer and 1,589 women who had breast cancer.
They examined people who had breast cancer and ingested n-3 PUFAs and compared the results to those who did not have breast cancer but nevertheless consumed n-3 PUFAs. The researchers also investigated whether or whether the link was influenced by factors such as menopause, the presence or absence of hormone receptors, and the consumption of linoleic acid. According to the results of the research, a larger intake of n-3 PUFAs was associated with a lower probability of developing breast cancer. This was most prevalent in women who had not yet reached menopause as well as those who had specific types of breast tumors.
Women who were overweight or obese and increased their consumption of foods rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids were found to have a lower risk of developing breast cancer, as stated in a press release. However, there was no statistically significant association between women who maintained a healthy weight and a lower risk of breast cancer. Women who carry a particular genetic risk have an increased likelihood of developing breast cancer before menopause. A person’s lifetime risk is also increased by factors related to their genes, such as having a family history of breast cancer.
However, not every woman who falls into the high-risk category will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. According to Dr. Thomas Strack, chief medical officer at Faeth Therapeutics, only 7 percent of breast cancer occurs in women before menopause, but when it does, it tends to be a more aggressive form of the disease. Breast cancer risk is increased in women who have passed menopause if they are overweight, have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or both of these conditions. In addition, obesity, and more specifically abdominal obesity, is linked to low-grade systemic inflammation as well as an imbalance between pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules. Both of these factors may contribute to an increased risk of breast cancer in a person.
