Willie Nelson Biography and Career:

Willie Hugh Nelson was born in the United States on April 29, 1933. The critical and commercial success of Willie Nelson’s albums Shotgun Willie (1973), Red Headed Stranger (1975), and Stardust (1978) made him one of the most well-known country music musicians. He was one of the most notable figures of outlaw country, a subgenre of country music that originated in the late 1960s as a reaction against the Nashville sound.

Nelson has appeared in over 30 films, co-authored several books, and advocated for the legalization of biofuels and marijuana. Nelson wrote his first song at the age of seven and joined his first band when he was ten. Born during the Great Depression, his grandparents raised him. During his senior year of high school, he toured as the lead vocalist and guitarist with the Bohemian Polka.

Following his high school graduation in 1950, he enlisted in the United States Air Force but was subsequently discharged due to back troubles. After his return, Nelson attended Baylor University for two years but dropped out owing to his musical success. During the late 1950s, he simultaneously performed as a singer and songwriter while working as a disc jockey at radio stations in his native Texas and several radio stations in the Pacific Northwest.

During this time, he composed such country classics as “Funny How Time Slips Away,” “Hello Walls,” “Pretty Paper,” and “Crazy.” Later, he signed a publishing deal with Pamper Music, which enabled him to join Ray Price’s band as a bassist. In 1962, he released his debut album, titled…And Then I Wrote. Due to this success, Nelson signed with RCA Victor in 1964 and joined the Grand Ole Opry the following year.

After several mid-chart songs in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Nelson grew weary of the corporate Nashville music scene and relocated to Austin, Texas, in 1972. Nelson was motivated to return to performing by Austin’s burgeoning music culture, which included frequent appearances at the Armadillo World Headquarters. Nelson began releasing outlaw country albums, including Shotgun Willie and Phases & Phases, after signing with Atlantic Records in 1973. He moved to Columbia Records in 1975 and released the critically praised album Red Headed Stranger.

Wanted! The Outlaws was a country album that he recorded with Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, and Tompall Glaser in the same year. During the mid-1980s, he joined the country supergroup The Highwaymen along with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson, while releasing hit albums such as Honeysuckle Rose and recording hit songs such as “On the Road Again,” “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before,” and “Pancho and Lefty.”

Since 1985, Nelson has played at each of the annual Farm Aid concerts on behalf of American farmers, which he helped organize. In 1990, the Internal Revenue Service seized Nelson’s assets on the grounds that he owed $32 million in back taxes. Poor investments he made in the 1980s worsened the difficulty of his debt repayment. In 1992, Nelson released The IRS Tapes: Who’ll Buy My Memories?; the earnings from the double album, which were designated for the IRS, combined with the sale of Nelson’s possessions were sufficient to pay off his debt.
