Woody Allen Biography and Career:

He is best known for his bittersweet comedies containing elements of parody, slapstick, and the absurd, but he also made serious dramas with dark themes and bleak landscapes reminiscent of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman—who, perhaps more profoundly Allen was a compassionate director for women, penning strong and distinct female characters.

Although he was largely recognized as a master filmmaker by the late 1970s, his later work and charges of sexual abuse tainted his reputation. Allen Konigsberg grew up in a Jewish home in Brooklyn. He adored his little sister, who would eventually join him as a producer. He loved athletics, magic, movies, and jazz as a child (taking up the clarinet as a teenager, though his musical idol was saxophonist Sidney Bechet). In high school, he began sending quips to newspaper columnists, including the nationally syndicated Earl Wilson. Soon he was writing jokes for entertainers as Woody Allen. Student life at New York University (film major) and City College of New York (erratic attendance) ended abruptly.

Allen joined the Garry Moore Show in 1960. Around this time, he started doing stand-up comedy in Greenwich Village venues, which led to TV appearances and comedy CDs. In 1964, Allen impressed actress Shirley MacLaine and producer Charles K. Feldman enough to write the screenplay for What’s New, Pussycat? (1965), in which he also starred. Allen’s first film, What’s Up, Tiger Lily? (1966), was a remake of a James Bond-like Japanese action picture, International Secret Police: Key of Keys (1965). In Casino Royale, Allen played Bond’s nephew.

Meanwhile, he wrote Don’t Drink the Water, which premiered on Broadway in 1966. Allen also made his first New Yorker appearance that year. Allen would go on to write hundreds of sophisticated humorous pieces for the magazine over several decades, which were gathered in volumes like Without Feathers (1975) and Getting Even (1985).

Take the Money and Run (1969) was Allen’s first film. It was co-written by Mickey Rose and Allen, who starred as a terminally unskilled robber who learned his art from old Warner Brothers jail films. The film, made for about $2 million, earned Allen a three-picture deal with United Artists Corporation, with whom he would work throughout the 1970s. From 1969 to 1970, Allen starred on Broadway in another of his own plays, the romantic comedy Play It Again, Sam. Allen reprised his role as a bashful film critic seeking romantic guidance from an apparition of Humphrey Bogart in the 1972 Herbert Ross film adaption.

In Bananas (1971), Allen played a foolish, neurotic Manhattanite pulled into a fake Central American revolution. Bananas had a few moments of absurdist humor that rank among Allen’s funniest films. Allen satirized David Reuben’s popular sex guidebook in Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*but Were Afraid to Ask) (1972). In Sleeper (1973), Allen played a neurotic health-food mogul who goes into surgery and wakes up 200 years later to find that scientists have frozen him and he is a stranger in an even weirder land. Sex is outlawed, so he joins the revolutionary underground led by Diane Keaton (Allen’s co-star in Play It Again, Sam). Love and Death (1975), a spoof of Leo Tolstoy’s literature, Sergey Eisenstein’s films, and other Russian cultural icons, received mixed reviews.

A year after starring in Martin Ritt’s outstanding drama about Hollywood blacklisting, Allen made Annie Hall (1977), a breakthrough picture that substantially improved his status as a filmmaker. It was Allen’s first attempt to merge genuine sentiment with his signature theatre-of-the-ridiculous. Despite Allen’s denial, the touching love story resembled features of Keaton and Allen’s real-life romance.

The film also established Allen’s on-screen persona: a neurotic, educated, wisecracking, moralistic, phobia-ridden pessimist who finds solace in art and love, and who is really a good person. Best Picture, Best Actress (Keaton), Best Director, and Best Screenplay (Allen and collaborator Marshall Brickman). Denise Allen, who typically played clarinet at Michael’s Pub in Manhattan on Monday nights, elected not to attend the Academy Awards. Allen’s following picture, Interiors (1978), was a loving homage to Ingmar Bergman’s heavy psychodramas.

Critics were divided on this family drama starring Geraldine Page, Maureen Stapleton, E.G. Marshall, Mary Beth Hurt, and Keaton, with some calling it pretentious. Despite the film’s box office failure, Allen was nominated for best director and best original screenplay. Allen resurfaced with NYC (1979). It was an homage to the city that Allen adored, beautifully photographed (by Gordon Willis in black-and-white), written (by Allen and Brickman, whose script was nominated for an Oscar), and composed (by George Gershwin).

Manhattan, though not as popular as Annie Hall, is Allen’s best film. It is more polished and less sentimental than Annie Hall but has the depth of Interiors. In the 1980s, Allen was admired by both filmgoers and critics. Allen’s minimal direction of his actors was well-known, and certain performers did better than others. By 2012, 15 different actors have been nominated for an Oscar for their work with him.

A decade with United Artists, Allen moved his films to Orion Pictures, where he had the creative freedom to make movies his way: with modest budgets, scripts that allowed for actor improvisation, and intricately coordinated movement and cinematography that allowed for long takes, allowing Allen to do much of his editing in-camera rather than post. His films were expected to do better overseas than in the US.
