Zoë Bell Biography and Career:
Zo E. Bell is a well-known New Zealand actress and stuntwoman. She was born on November 17, 1978. Her work as a stunt double for Lucy Lawless in Xena: Warrior Princess and for Uma Thurman in Kill Bill is among the most prominent examples of her work in this field. As an actor, Bell has worked in both television and cinema and has a starring role in the online series Angel of Death. Bell has also been featured on television. She arguably became most famous for her role as herself in the film Death Proof, which Quentin Tarantino directed.
She had an acting appearance in Quentin Tarantino’s film The Hateful Eight in 2015, and she made an acting appearance in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019, in addition to her roles as stunt coordinator and stuntwoman. Bell was born on the island of Waiheke in New Zealand with parents Tish, a nurse, and Andrew Bell, a physician.
Jake is her younger brother’s name, while Leonhard is the name of her foster brother. Leonhard now resides in Germany, in his former city. She spent her childhood on Waiheke Island, which is part of Auckland. Bell started his taekwondo training at 15 after having previously competed in gymnastics at a young age. In addition to that, she was active in hobbies such as dancing, high diving, scuba diving, and track and field.
Bell received her education at Selwyn College and Auckland Girls’ Grammar School. In 1992, Bell’s father was treating a stuntman for a head injury and returned home with a phone number for his daughter to contact. This was the beginning of Bell’s career. Her first stunt work was doing a vehicle leap for the soap opera Shortland Street, set in New Zealand.
Both Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess was shot in New Zealand, and she was involved in the stunt work for both of those productions. By the time the fourth season of Xena aired, she was working as Lucy Lawless’s stunt double. She shattered vertebrae in her back while doing wire work stunts for the program. Still, she kept working for an additional week until another stunt, in which a breakaway chair was smashed on her back, rendered her unable to continue working.
After Xena, she participated in independent films and on television. During this time, she collaborated with Adrienne Wilkinson, with whom she had previously worked on Xena, in the short film Reflections as a stunt coordinator and in a supporting role. She became Uma Thurman’s stand-in in Kill Bill, directed by Quentin Tarantino.
Even though she was first recruited as Thurman’s “crash and smash” duplicate, the stunt crew quickly discovered that Bell would also make an excellent double for fight sequences and prepared her appropriately. Even though she was hired initially for this role, Bell did not appear in the film. Wushu was one of the fighting styles that Bell needed to become proficient in. She sustained injuries to her ribs and the ligaments in her wrist when she acted out the scene where she was propelled backward by a shotgun blast after production for Kill Bill: Volume 2. Bell underwent surgery and then spent the better part of a year recovering.
After filming for Kill Bill, she was given the “The Bells” sign, displayed in front of the house where Vernita Green’s character lived in the film. After some time, she handed it over to her parents. She undertook stunt work for the movie Catwoman after both of the Kill Bill films, in which she performed spectacular falls and worked as a double for Sharon Stone.
The documentary Double Dare was first shown to the public in 2004. It followed Bell and Jeannie Epper, an experienced stuntwoman, as they went about their business in Hollywood and was mostly centered on the two of them. The film gave a glimpse of opposite sides of the stuntwoman spectrum, with Epper, who was then an old Hollywood hand, continuing her hunt for employment in an industry where age is not always seen to be an advantage, and Bell, who had just moved to Hollywood and was seeking to break into the profession at the time.
The production of Double Dare spanned the whole of Bell’s career, from the conclusion of her run on Xena to the start of her work on Kill Bill: Volume 1.For their double the knife battle that took place between the characters Beatrix Kiddo and Vernita Green in Kill Bill: Volume 1, Bell and Angela Meryl, who doubled for Vivica A. Fox, were nominated in 2004 for the Taurus World Stunt Awards in the categories of “Best Overall Stunt by a Woman” and “Best Fight”
In 2005, Bell was considered for nominations for a Taurus award in the following categories: “Best Fight,” “Best High Work,” and “Best Overall Stunt by a Woman.” For their battle in Budd’s trailer in Kill Bill: Volume 2, she and Monica Staggs, who played Daryl Hannah’s stunt double, received both the Best Battle and the Best Overall Stunt awards. Her performance in the film Catwoman earned her a nomination for Best High Work for a fall of more than 200 feet.
Following her role as Catwoman, Bell went on to do stunts in the action film The Kingdom and also in another film directed by Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds. In Tarantino’s next movie, Death Proof (2007), she portrayed herself and did all of her stunts, the most memorable of which was when she clung to the hood of a speeding 1970 Dodge Challenger. Tarantino gave her a prominent part in the movie, and she performed all of her stunts.
