Dan Perri Biography and Career:

Daniel Richard Perri is a title sequence designer who works in the cinema and television industries in the United States. He was born on August 11, 1945. The Exorcist (1973), Taxi Driver (1976), Star Wars (1977), Raging Bull (1980), Airplane! (1980), and Suspiria (2018) are only a few of the films from which he has been responsible for designing the major titles. He has been working in the field of cinema title design since the 1970s.

Throughout the subsequent several years, Perri’s family relocated between New York and Los Angeles regularly. When his parents eventually split, the young Dan remained with his mother, who was an artist and supported his skill. Dan’s mother was also an artist. Perri started a modest sign painting company on Long Island when she was only twelve years old. She sold signs to local businesses; these businesses included shops, marketplaces, bars, and restaurants.

The art instructor at Perri’s school, Barbara Brooks, who had previously worked as an art director for Madison Avenue advertising agencies and had transitioned into teaching, was essential in the development of Perri’s abilities. Graphis magazines and Communication Arts magazine were two of the publications that she urged him to read. She also pushed him to study books and design guides associated with the advertising sector.

Perri had a brief apprenticeship at Hixson & Jorgensen, an advertising firm located on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, where she worked after she graduated from high school in 1963. As early as 1964, he enrolled at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, where he remained for almost one and a half years until withdrawing from his studies and enrolled in a college in the area. He began designing album covers for smaller record labels and graphics for local businesses about this time. He also began designing visuals for them.

Upon making contact with Saul Bass, a film graphics designer, Perri proceeded to harass him in an attempt to get employment at his studio located on Sunset Boulevard. After some time, Perri was able to get employment with Bass by way of his illustrator, Art Goodman. Perri was a member of the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Repose. During his time in the Navy, he built an on-board newspaper that was designated The Repose Reprise.

Immediately after her service in the military, Perri joined forces with Phill Norman, Wayne Fitzgerald Don Record, and Steve Smith, a buddy from their time together in school, to begin working at Cinefx. Perri and Smith both left their jobs after a year and went on to establish their own independent design company, which they eventually named Perri & Smith.

Between the years 1969 and 1973, the two individuals collaborated on a variety of projects, most of which were low-budget television features. However, their credits also include films such as Electra Glide in Blue and several blaxploitation films directed by Gene Corman. Because of the frequent exploitation of the designers and the occasional failure of customers to pay, the company finally went out of business.

It was in 1973 that Billy Friedkin allowed Perri to create the main titles for The Exorcist, which was his first solo job. This was the moment when Perri’s career took hold. He was now able to attract additional work, and he quickly found himself working on high-profile films. Perri’s portfolio now included a blockbuster picture, which allowed him to attract more employment. The main title sequence and a logo for the film Nashville (1975) were both commissioned by Robert Altman for use in marketing purposes.

Using low-budget television ads from K-Tel Records as a source of inspiration, Perri created an odd and kitschy scene. Johnny Grant provided the vocals for this segment, which was loud and shouty. When Martin Scorsese was looking for someone to create the titles for Taxi Driver in 1976, he worked with Perri. Film copying and slit-scan were the two methods that Perri used to color-treat the film after he had taken the video from the second unit.

The result was a graphic sequence that was highly stylized and represented the “underbelly” of New York City via the use of garish colors, bright neon signs, distorted midnight scenes, and deep black levels. This sequence was backed by a jazz soundtrack composed by Bernard Herrmann. In the early stages of the creation of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Steven Spielberg commissioned Perri to create a logo for the film.

Perri created a logotype using the Handel Gothic font, even though he only had a script to work with. Spielberg was so pleased with the outcome that he decided to use the logo on all of the production stationery and staff shirts from that point on. He wanted Perri to create the whole advertising campaign for Close Encounters based on his logo, which is an unusual request in the movie industry. Spielberg had sufficient authority to keep creative control over the film’s branding.
